Cal Makes East Coast Swing For Three-Game Series At Pittsburgh

BERKELEY – The California baseball team heads to the East Coast for a three-game nonconference series at Pittsburgh starting Friday at 3 p.m. PT. All three contests this weekend will be streamed on the ACCNX. Fans can also follow the action via live stats at Statbroadcast.com.
 
Cal (18-19) is coming off a heartbreaking 6-5 loss at No. 8 Stanford on Tuesday night. Overall, the Bears have gone 6-4 over their last 10 games and are 12-4 in nonconference play this year. The Panthers enter Friday's contest with an overall record of 17-21. Pitt is  6-8 at home this season. Last weekend, the Panthers lost a home series to Wake Forest and are 4-6 over their last 10 contests.

  • Tuesday's loss to the Cardinal snapped a five-game nonconference winning streak by the Bears.
  • This weekend's series is part of a season-long eight-game road trip. The trip will continue with a game at Santa Clara next week and conclude with a three-game series at UCLA on May 5-7.
  • The Bears are 7-8 on the road this season but are 3-2 over their last five contests away from home. As a team, Cal is hitting .258 in away games and averaging 5.5 runs per game. Four players are hitting over .300 in road contests with Kade Kretzschmar hitting a blistering .358 away from the friendly confines.
  • Rodney Green Jr. and Kade Kretzschmar both hit home runs Tuesday. Cal has hit a home run in three straight contests and at least one home run in 13 of their last 16 games. Cal is 15-12 when they hit at least one home run.
  • Nathan Manning continues to be a spark for the Bears' offense. Manning returned to the lineup against Utah on April 14 and since then is hitting .429 (12-or-28) with three doubles and two triples. In the 10 games that Manning has started this season, Cal is 6-4 and averaging 7.45 runs per contest,. Cal is 11-15 and averaging 5.6 runs per game  In the 26 games he hasn't played.
  • Saturday starter Paulshawn Pasqualotto is looking for his third win of the season. The junior from Las Vegas is 2-0 with a 4.26 ERA this year. The Bears are 7-3 in games he starts.
  • The Bears' pitching staff issued seven free passes Tuesday night, which is the second-most they have issued in a game this year. Overall, Cal is one of the best teams in the nation at limiting walks, averaging 3.64 per nine which ranks 30th in the nation (out of 295 teams).
  • Green Jr's home run against Stanford on Tuesday night came with two outs. On the year, Green Jr. is second on the team with 10 two-out RBIs – eight have come in the last 10 games.
  • Kade Kretzschmar remains red-hot in the month of April. Kretzschmar is hitting .492 (30-for-61) this month, with six doubles, a triple, and seven home runs. In 15 games this month, he has 10 multi-hit games, six with three or more. His 10 multi-hit games for the month of April are tied for the most in the Pac-12 with Arizona's Mac Bingham.  
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Friday will be the second-ever meeting between the Bears and Panthers. In their only previous contest, Pitt defeated Cal 9-4 in the 1995 Knoxville, Tennessee, Regional. This will be just the 42nd meeting between Cal and a school from the ACC. All-time, the Bears are 17-24 against the ACC conference, and 1-3 under Mike Neu.

Cal returns to the Bay Area for a nonconference clash at WCC foe Santa Clara on Tuesday. The game between the Bears and Broncos will be streamed on the WCC Network and is scheduled for a 6 p.m. PT first pitch.
