Bears Prep For 128th Big Meet

Cal Looks To Sweep Cardinal For Second Straight Year

BERKELEY– The outdoor regular-season finale has finally come for California track & field, and the Golden Bears will face their toughest test yet on Saturday as Stanford travels north to Edwards Stadium for the 128th iteration of the Big Meet. Field events are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. PT with the men's hammer throw, while the track events will start at 12 p.m.

Cal swept the Cardinal last year at Cobb Track & Angell Field – the men winning 86-77 and the women 71.5 – and could ride the momentum from another historic season to repeat for the first time since 1996 (and sweep for the first time at Edwards since 2014). The Bears have their work cut out for them, however, as Stanford's men are ranked 15th in the nation to Cal's 20th, while the Cardinal women are even more imposing at No. 12.

In Cal's favor are the number of NCAA leaders – sophomore discus thrower and collegiate-holder Mykolas Alekna and hammer thrower Anna Purchase – to the visitors' 10,000m runner Charles Hicks. Both teams have 11 athletes apiece on the NCAA's 2023 Top-25 Division 1 lists.

Five of Cal's current athletes own program records: Alekna, senior Kegan Schroeter (men's hammer), senior Amari Turner (women's pole vault), junior Jada Hicks (4x100m) and sophomore Aysha Shaheed (women's 4x100m); Schroeter's and Amari's records were both set earlier this year. Stanford, meanwhile, boasts two athletes on its roster with program records in Udodi Onwuzurike (100m/200m) and Ky Robinson (3000m steeplechase).

The Bears will also be honoring their 21-member graduating class toward the end of the meet.
