Galan Pitches Bears To Win

Sophomore Starter Throws Career-High Six Inning Gem

BERKELEY – Entering tonight's midweek game Cal baseball head coach Mike Neu knew he was short on pitchers. Andres Galan gave him just what the Golden Bears needed, a five-hit quality start as Cal defeated visiting Pacific 5-4 on Monday night at Stu Gordon Stadium.

Cal (12-12) had just enough offense to get back into the win column, scoring five runs on eight hits. However, it was the Bears' pitching led by Andres Galan's (1-1) career night that was the difference. Galan's previous best for innings pitched was 2.2 at Arizona on March 10. Tonight, he went six complete, scattering five hits, three runs (one earned) with a walk, and four strikeouts to earn his first career victory.

Pacific (9-17) scored the game's opening run in the top of the first and added two more in the second on a failed pickoff attempt by catcher Nico Button, but Galan settled down and finished his outing throwing four scoreless frames. After a leadoff single in the third, Galan retired 12-straight, finishing his night with a strikeout to end the sixth.

Jack Kirrer tossed two strong innings in relief and Austin Turkington closed it out for his first save of the season throwing a scoreless top of the ninth.

The Tigers made it interesting late, hitting three-straight two-out singles in the top of the eighth inning. The last by Jeremy Lea to cut the Bears' lead to one. Kirrer responded by getting Tony Otis to strike out and end the threat with the tying run stranded at third.

Cal had a season-high nine stolen bases on the night, four by Rodney Green Jr. Cal's speed played a big role in four of their five runs on the evening. Caleb Lomavita scored Cal's first run of the game from second on a single down the right field line by Kade Kretzschmar. Souto scored the first of two runs on an RBI groundout by Nico Button.

Souto later tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth inning when he blasted a 3-1 offering over the left field fence for his third home run of the year. Carson Crawford extended his reached base safely streak to 16 games when he drew a walk in the sixth. He came around to score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Lomavita. Kretzschmar knocked in Green Jr. from third in the bottom of the seventh for Cal's final run of the game.

Kretzschmar continues to heat up, he finished the night 2-for-4, his second-straight multi-hit game. Green Jr. went 2-for-4, his seventh multi-hit game of the season. Souto also collected a pair of hits.

Caden Casagrande (0-1) took the loss for the Tigers. He tossed one inning, allowing one run on a hit and two walks.
