BERKELEY –
Makena Smith and
Kacey Zobac both homered in their final home game but the California softball team came up short in an 8-5 loss to No. 14 Oregon on Sunday at Levine-Fricke Field.
The Ducks (35-11, 14-7 Pac-12) got their 13
th straight win and moved into a tie for second-place in the conference with the win behind a six-run fourth inning. The Golden Bears (31-17-1, 7-13-1 Pac-12) were led by three
Tatum Anzaldo hits and three RBI from Zobac.
Cal jumped in front for the first time of the series in the bottom of the opening frame on a two-run Zobac double and made it 3-0 on Smith's solo home run in the third. It was the 13
th of the season for the senior from Murrieta, California, and the 43
rd of her career to take sole place of fifth in Cal history on the career home run list.
Sona Halajian started in the circle for the Bears and was clean the first time through the powerful Oregon lineup but the Ducks got it going the next time around. Halajian got the first out of the fourth before a walk and four straight hits made it 3-2 as
Ashanti McDade took over for the third in the series.
Oregon hit two more RBI singles and a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3 heading to the home half with a six-run inning. Cal got to within a run on a Zobac solo shot, her ninth of the year, and an
Acacia Anders RBI single but Oregon got two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away.

Cal travels to Arizona for the final Pac-12 series of the season beginning on Friday with a 7 p.m. first pitch from Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium in Tucson.
