Pelusi’s Solid Day Earns Third-Place Decathlon Finish

Senior Transfer Leads Group Of Golden Bears At Edwards Stadium

BERKELEY – The Brutus Hamilton Invitational's first-ever multi-events competition came to a close on Friday, as California track & field battled chilly and wet conditions at Edwards Stadium for the second half of the men's decathlon and the final three events of the women's heptathlon.

Oregon's Nathan Poff finished on top for the men at 6,738 points, while the Ducks' Colleen Uzoekwe led the way for the women with 5,349 points.

In total, six of Cal's athletes competed in the men's decathlon or the women's heptathlon for the first time as Golden Bears.

Despite the weather, the Bears still managed to put up some top marks. In the decathlon, senior Cole Whatley led the field in the 110m hurdles with his time of 15.15, followed closely by freshman Seth Johnson's second-place time of 15.21 and sophomore Riley Knott's third-place 15.22. The next event was freshman Parker Terrill's time to shine, as his discus throw of 38.00m (124-8) was good for both first place and a personal best; Knott also earned his second top-three finish of the day, coming in second at 36.67m (120-3).

Not to be outdone, senior Jono Pelusi claimed a share of his own event title with a first-place pole vault mark of 4.72m (15-5.75). Next, in the javelin throw, Knott followed up his third- and second-place efforts with his third first-place finish of the decathlon, a personal-best heave of 49.56m (162-7). Finally, Pelusi closed out the two-day stretch with a decisive victory in the 1500m run: his time of 4:33.74 was nearly seven seconds better than the second-place finisher, allowing him to end the competition with a third-place point total of 6355 to lead all Cal competitors.

The women's heptathlon started off with the long jump, in which sophomore Yuki Hamachi (5.66m/18-7) and freshman Torre Anderson (5.50m/18-0.5) each set season-best marks worth third and fourth place, respectively. They then competed in the javelin throw, with Hamachi finishing just outside the top three at 30.33m (99-6), before finishing their day with the 800m run, in which Anderson finished just ahead of Hamachi at 2:42.05 to the latter's 2:43.69. The latter event was enough to cement Anderson in fourth place with 4528 points, while Hamachi totaled a score of 4349.

Cal's final day at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational will also be its busiest, as the majority of the events are scheduled for Saturday, starting with the men's hammer throw at 9:30 a.m. PT.
