BERKELEY – The Cal baseball team had three costly errors early and Washington State took advantage winning the rubber match 7-1 on Sunday afternoon at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Cal (22-25, 10-17 Pac-12) could not find its groove offensively with the top of the order going a combined 0-for-16. The Golden Bears collected just five hits on the day and were 1-for-11 with runners on and 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
Peyton Schulze had the big hit of the afternoon, he smashed a solo home run in the second, his seventh home run of the season. Schulze was one of two layers with multiple hits, he went 2-for-4.
Nathan Manning was the other Cal player with multiple hits, he was 2-for-3.
Dom Souto had the other hit for Cal, he was 1-for-3.
Washington State (29-20, 10-16 Pac-12) finished the day with seven runs on nine hits. The Cougars were 4-for-11 with runners in scoring position and successfully got the leadoff hitter aboard in five of the nine innings. Sam Brown provided plenty of offense for the Cougars, going 2-for-4 with two home runs and three driven in.
Shane Spencer (2-0) earned the win for WSU. He went seven complete, scattering five hits, with a walk and six strikeouts. The lone blemish on his day was the home run to Schulze in the second.
Chris Stamos (2-3) took the hard-luck loss. The senior tossed two strong innings, giving up just two hits and two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts. The home run he surrendered to Brown was helped by the wind that was blowing out to left field.
For the third-straight game, the Cougars scored four runs early. WSU scored a run in the first on the home run from Brown, one in the second, and two in the third. A wild pitch and a throwing error on a stealing attempt led to two of the three runs for Washington State. The Cougars put the game away in the fifth when Brown struck again, hitting a two-run home run over the left field fence to make it 6-1.
