Former Tennessee Volunteer Joins Bears
BERKELEY – The California women's basketball team announced the signing of junior transfer Marta Suárez to its roster for the 2023-24 season.
A 6-foot-3 guard/forward transfer from the University of Tennessee, Suárez is originally from Oviedo, Spain. She is a versatile addition that can play all spots on the floor.
During the 2022-23 season, Suárez averaged 12.4 minutes a contest, 4.9 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. She scored a season-high 10 points in a win over Rutgers on Nov. 19 and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds against No. 9 Virginia Tech on Dec. 4.
"I'm extremely excited about Marta joining our circle," Cal head coach
Charmin Smith said. "She gives us great size on the interior and can stretch the floor and exploit mismatches on the perimeter with her versatility. Marta is an extremely skilled basketball player and a strong addition to our roster."
Suárez had to sit out the 2021-22 season due to injury.
As a freshman in 2020-21, Suárez played in 22 games with 14 starts and averaged 4.1 PPG, 3.6 RPG and 16 MPG, while shooting 41% from the field on her way to earning SEC All-Freshman Team honors. She was named SEC Freshman of the Week after averaging 8.0 points and 5.0 rebounds while shooting 63.6% from the field in games against No. 3 UConn and No. 12 Kentucky.
Suárez also represented Spain at the 2021 FIBA U19 Women's World Cup in which she averaged 6.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.3 steals per game. She also competed in the 2018 FIBA U16 Women's European Championship and averaged 7.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 1.4 assists per contest and helped her team finish in third place.
"I am very excited for what's to come," Suárez said. "Playing for Charmin, her values and her passion, not just for the game, but also for the person, is what I am looking forward to the most. Her experience as a player and coach will help me expand my game and build a good foundation for my basketball career after college. Cal has something special and a great foundation to do great things. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to become part of this family."
Suárez attended the Joachim Blume Institute in Spain, where she was a four-star Blue Star Europe Prospect. In 2019-20, she played for Segle XXI Barcelona in Spain's LF2 League and averaged 12.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game as a starter.
