Vic So’oto Adds Special Teams Coordinator Duties
Second-Year Cal Staffer Will Also Continue To Coach Golden Bears’ Outside Linebackers

Vic So'oto has added duties as the special teams coordinator for the California football team. So'oto will also continue to coach the Golden Bears' outside linebackers.
"Vic is a versatile and talented coach, as well as a tremendous recruiter," Wilcox said. "He has been a great addition to our staff since joining our program last year, and we are excited to increase his positive impact by adding special teams coordinator duties."
"I am honored and excited to take on the role of special teams coordinator, and I am grateful to Coach Wilcox for the confidence he has in me to lead this unit," So'oto said. "I am fortunate to be a part of a talented staff that is equally invested in the improvement and performance of our special teams. Vic So'oto – Special Teams Coordinator/Outside Linebackers Coach, 2nd Season At Cal
– In his first campaign at Cal in 2022, So'oto ran the Golden Bears' kickoff unit that posted an average of 19.83 yards allowed per return that was Cal's best since 2016 and ranked fifth in the Pac-12
– Coached a 2022 outside linebacker group that was highlighted by the play of the team's leader in tackles for loss and sacks in
Xavier Carlton (6.5 TFL, -31 yards; 4.5 sacks, -26 yards) and fourth-year player
Myles Jernigan, (51 tackles; 5.0 tackles for loss, -23 yards; 4.0 sacks, -22 yards; 1 FF, 1 FR), with both players returning in 2023 after putting up the best numbers of their collegiate careers last season and Carlton a preseason All-Pac-12 pick
– Prior to joining the Cal staff on March 1, 2022, the former NFL and collegiate player spent the previous two campaigns in 2020 and 2021 on the USC coaching staff after a prior four-year stint at Virginia (2016-19)
– So'oto was on coaching staffs that won division titles in back-to-back seasons with the Cavaliers in 2019 (ACC Coastal) and Trojans in 2020 (Pac-12 South), while reaching bowls in each of his last three campaigns at Virginia (2017 Military Bowl, 2018 Belk Bowl, 2019 Orange Bowl)
– So'oto began his coaching career in 2015 as an intern at his alma mater BYU, where he spent six seasons as a football student-athlete from 2005-10
– As an NFL player, So'oto was on rosters for four years in Green Bay (2011-12), Oakland (2012), Washington (2012), Arizona (2013), New Orleans (2013) and Pittsburgh (2014)
