Matt Bowe Named Head Coach At Michigan

Former Cal Associate Head Coach Made Immediate Impact In Berkeley

BERKELEY – The University of Michigan announced Friday that California associate head coach Matt Bowe has been named the head coach of the Wolverines' men's and women's swimming & diving teams.

Bowe joined the Golden Bears in May 2022 and had a massive impact on the program in his one season in Bear Territory, helping Cal secure its second consecutive and eighth overall NCAA men's national championship. Cal finished the 2022-23 season with 14 men's swimmers earning CSCAA All-America honors, as well as an individual national champion in Destin Lasco.

Bowe was also instrumental in helping the program's success out of the pool. The Bears had two Academic All-Americans in Bjorn Seeliger and Dylan Hawk.

"We could not be more excited for Matt, Lila, and their family in accepting this position at Michigan," said acting director of swimming & diving David Durden. "Even though it was just for a year, Matt made a tremendous impact on our program. He brought a level of thoughtfulness, professionalism, and passion to the workplace every single day for both our men's and women's programs. I am excited for the Michigan swimmers to work with Matt. I am also proud of our program in helping Matt to be in a position to take the head job at Michigan. As I spoke with our team today, our goal as a program is to continually elevate those around us. We are proud that we are doing that with Matt and his new position. Congrats again Matt, and Go Bears!"

Before arriving at Cal, Bowe spent five years on staff at Ohio State. Under Bowe's guidance, the Buckeyes were the most-improved men's team at the NCAA Division I level in 2019, jumping to ninth place at the NCAAs following a 28th-place finish in 2018. Bowe had stops at Indiana and Eastern Michigan prior to his time in Columbus. The native of Silecroft in Cumbria, U.K. was a member of Team Great Britain from 2003-09 and was the 2006 British champion in the 100-meter butterfly.
