Cal Announces First Set Of Nonconference Home Dates
Bears To Host Third-Annual Raising The B.A.R. Invitational, Gonzaga
BERKELEY – The California women's basketball team has announced an initial slate of nonconference home game dates for the 2023-24 season, including a matchup with perennially-ranked Gonzaga and the third-annual Raising the B.A.R. Invitational. The complete 2023-24 nonconference schedule as well as game times and television selections will be released at later dates.
The Raising the B.A.R. (Basketball, Activism, Representation) Invitational will return to Haas Pavilion on Nov. 24 and 25. The tournament was created by head coach
Charmin Smith to elevate the voices, stories and people in the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging and Justice space, and features teams led by Black female head coaches. This year's field includes Texas A&M, led by 2021 SEC Coach of the Year Joni Taylor, and San Jose State, led by former Cal assistant coach (2019-21) April Phillips. One other participating team and bracket information will be announced at a later date.
"I'm excited to bring the Raising the B.A.R. Invitational back to Haas and to feature Texas A&M and San Jose State," Smith said. "Joni is a great friend and she is a coach who is willing to have the tough conversations surrounding social justice. I know our fans will love seeing April back in Haas and in a head coaching role!"
Cal will clash with Gonzaga for the first time in program history on Dec. 7 in Berkeley. The Bulldogs are coming off an impressive 2022-23 season in which they finished the regular season ranked No. 19 nationally and went 28-5 overall and 17-1 in the West Coast Conference on the way to earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the 12th straight season.
The Golden Bears' regular season will officially tip off on Nov. 6 in Haas Pavilion against Cal State Bakersfield, a squad that Cal last played in the 2020-21 season and owns a 4-1 all-time advantage against.
