Bears Go Live, Run Over 100 Plays In First Scrimmage
QBs Fernando Mendoza, Sam Jackson V And Ben Finley Each Responsible For One Of Team’s Seven TDs
BERKELEY – Cal ran approximately 105 live plays in its first football scrimmage of the team's 2023 training camp on Sunday at California Memorial Stadium and Travers Family Head Football Coach
Justin Wilcox saw some things he liked.
"What we're looking for [at these scrimmages] is good football, and we saw some of that today," Wilcox said. "Just off the top before watching the video, I thought all three quarterbacks had some moments.
Each of the three signal callers –
Sam Jackson V,
Fernando Mendoza and
Ben Finley – were live during portions of the scrimmage and each was responsible for one of the team's seven touchdowns. Mendoza put up the biggest numbers by completing 14-of-19 passes for 168 yards and a scoring toss on a 25-yarder to
Mason Mangum. Jackson was 11-of-16 for 98 yards with his score coming on a seven-yard touchdown pass to
Trond Grizzell, while adding three rushes for 29 yards. Finley completed 6-of-15 passes for 61 yards and ran four times for yards including an eight-yard touchdown trot.
Jordan King led the Golden Bears with four receptions and 77 yards receiving, while
Ashton Stredick led all rushers with 70 yards on only five carries including a 27-yard touchdown that was the longest run of the day. Andy Alifieri picked up a pair of touchdowns on the ground, while
Dean-Taylor Chapman also had a rushing score and finished with 53 yards rushing on a scrimmage-high 15 carries.
There was not a turnover in the scrimmage.
Patrick McMorris registered a scrimmage-high seven tackles along with 1.0 tackles for loss and sacks (-6 yards).
Nate Burrell,
Ricky Correia,
David Reese and
Curlee Thomas IV also each had 1.0 sack of the five recorded by the defense. Sai Vadrawale blocked a field goal for the special teams.
"With 105 plays and a bunch of guys on the field at once, you are going to get a lot of video to watch," Wilcox said before later adding. "Overall, it was a productive day. We've just got to get a lot better."
