Bears Continue Heavy Work In Second Camp Scrimmage
Plenty Of Highlights On Both Sides Of The Ball As Bears Run Approximately 135 Live Plays
BERKELEY – The California football team put in another heavy work day on Saturday at California Memorial Stadium when the Golden Bears went approximately 135 plays live in their second scrimmage of training camp. In its two scrimmages, Cal has run approximately 240 plays.
"It was a long day today – 135 plays," Travers Family Head Football Coach
Justin Wilcox said. "It's supposed to be hard, and it got hard. A few guys could sustain, and a couple guys couldn't – that's mentally and physically, emotionally. We've got to build our stamina."
There were plenty of notables on both sides of the ball with the offense scoring nine touchdowns and one field goal but the defense also turning the ball over twice on downs, another time on an interception, blocking a field goal attempt and forcing six punts. The defense allowed just three points on the first five drives before the offense took over and scored eight touchdowns in its' next 11 possessions. The defense would come back to take three of the final four drives with its interception, getting the ball back in a four-minute situation and then keeping the offense from scoring after it got the ball back on its' own 22-yard line with 1:26 to go.
Ben Finley (11-21-1-180, 2 TD),
Fernando Mendoza (10-19-0-144, 2 TD) and
Sam Jackson V (10-21-0-108) continued to split up the quarterback reps for a Bears' passing game that completed 31-of-51 attempts for 432 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.
Marquis Montgomery (7-126, 2 TD) was the top receiver in the scrimmage followed by
Taj Davis (5-88), while the other two receiving scores went to
Jeremiah Hunter and
Dean-Taylor Chapman. Chapman (10-35) was also one of five Golden Bears with a rushing touchdown, while the others came from
Jaivian Thomas (16-47),
Ashton Stredick (16-43),
Isaiah Ifanse (9-42) and
Andy Alfieri (8-34). Finley (4-35) also had a strong game on the ground from the quarterback spot.
Myles Jernigan had the most notable day on defense with three of his four tackles coming in the form of sacks for a loss of 20 yards, while
Nate Burrell (-8 yards) and
Cade Uluave (-5 yards) each added 1.0 sack for the defense.
Marcus Scott II had the only interception of the scrimmage and ran It back 20 yards, while
Jeremiah Earby blocked a field goal attempt and
Isaiah Young posted a scrimmage-high three pass breakups.
Sergio Allen and
Ricky Correia each had a game-high-tying five stops.
