SEATTLE- The California women's soccer team opened Pac-12 conference play Friday with a 1-0 win over Washington. Fifth-year forward
Mia Fontana netted a goal in the 39th minute that was the difference in the match as the Golden Bears surpassed the .500 mark for the first time this season.
Cal improved to 4-3-1 with a 1-0-0 conference mark while the Huskies fell to 5-2-2 overall with a 0-1-0 Pac-12 mark.
The Bears only had two shots in the period to UW's four, but their one shot on goal was the only one they needed. Fontana found herself in a tight spot just outside the box and after splitting a pair of Husky defenders fired a ball with her left foot that found the back of the net. It was her second goal of the season after netting the equalizer against San Diego this past weekend.
Cal was outshot 10-5 in the match but placed four on frame matching Washington's tally.
The Bears stymied the Huskies in the second half to preserve their third clean sheet of the season, despite six shots by the host team.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Teagan Wy had four saves in the match and broke up a handful of other Husky attempts to earn her fourth career win.
