The California women's basketball team is hosting its fourth annual Race For Change at Lake Merritt in Oakland on Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. PT. This year's event is extra special as the team will be joined by Olympic bronze-medalist and well-known activist Dr. John Carlos – famous for displaying the Black Power salute on the podium with Tommie Smith at the 1968 Summer Olympics.

Created by the UC San Diego basketball programs as a way to address racial equality across the country, each program that joins chooses its own initiative centered around racial equality to fundraise for. Since the first event, the Bears have raised over $20,000 for Cal Athletics' Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging and Justice department. This year the goal is to raise $5,000 for the DEIBJ office. The department, led by Dr. Ty-Ron Douglas, is responsible for the development, implementing and administering of diversity, equal employment opportunity and affirmative action efforts in order to comply with government legislation and management directives and to support equity and inclusion programs.
