Davila Honored By College Soccer News
Cal's
Evan Davila earned a spot on the College Soccer News Team of the Week on Monday, after the senior midfielder scored the game-winning goal and had an assist in the 3-0 win over FDU – though the accolade came before he scored twice in the Labor Day shutout of Dartmouth. Davila, including all four games, leads Cal in scoring (7 points), goals (3) and game-winning goals (2).
Â
Bears Blank Knights, Big Green
Plenty of Bears stood out in the 3-0 win over FDU and the 4-0 win over Dartmouth. Those Bears include Davila, who collected three goals, one assist and two game-winning goals and goalkeeper
Connor Lambe producing a shutout over the Knights and combining with freshman Zach Andoh for the shutout of the Big Green.
Â
Against FDU, Davila scored off an
Arik Duncan assist in the fifth minute, while in the 56th minute Davila's corner kick set up a goal by Duncan, the first by the latter as a Bear. With less than 30 seconds remaining in the game, sophomore
Rohan McEligot netted his first goal as a Bear off assists from
Brendan Bell and
Allan Juarez. Lambe made four saves to earn his first shutout win.
Â
The Bears shook off a scoreless first half against Dartmouth to put four goals past the Big Green in the last 45 minutes, with three of the four set up or scored directly from free kicks. Davila scored off a free kick in the 48th minute to record his second winner in this season and later converted a penalty kick. Late in the game, midfielder
Juan Martinez's free kick found
Kevin Carmichael in the box, and the junior defender buried the ball in the back of the net. The only goal not set up by a free kick was Martinez's first goal of the year, assisted by forward
Nonso Adimabua in the 64th minute. Neither Cal goalkeeper – Lambe nor Andoh – had to make a save.
Â
With the Bears' busy schedule continuing with two more games this week, Cal was able to play 25 Bears and rest key players against Dartmouth.
