Cal Battles LIU, Stonehill In Back-to-Back Contests

BERKELEY – The California field hockey team begins a four-game road trip starting with back-to-back contests against Long Island University and Stonehill on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both games will be played at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium in Hempstead, New York, and will begin at 11 a.m. PT.
 
Friday's contest against LIU will be streamed live on NEC Front Row with live stats also available. Saturday's game will not have a video stream, but fans can follow live stats.

  • The Golden Bears are coming off a 1-1 week which included a 2-1 defeat at the hands of No. 16 Rutgers and a thrilling 3-2 win over No. 5 Penn State in double-overtime on Friday. With the win on Friday, Cal improved to 1-3 on the year and 1-2 against NFHCA Top 20-ranked teams.
  • Top-5 Win: The win over the Nittany Lions last Friday was Cal's first win over a top-5 team since the Bears defeated No. 4 Michigan 1-0 in Berkeley on October 27, 2007.
  • DPOW: For her efforts last week against Rutgers and Penn State, sophomore goalkeeper Tina Jolly was named the America East Defensive Player of the Week. It is the first career weekly honor for Jolly, who earned her first collegiate win against the Nittany Lions. Jolly tallied 10 saves with a .714 save percentage in the two games last week. For the year, Jolly ranks 36th nationally, averaging 4.0 saves per game. She ranks sixth in the AE in both saves (16), and save percentage (0.615).
  • Golden Goal: Graduate transfer Danielle Rhodes notched the game-winner in the second overtime against Penn State last Friday. The goal by Rhodes was her first as a Golden Bear and 57th in her brilliant collegiate career. Rhodes and fellow grad transfer Bente Baekers are two of the top-3 active goal scorers in the NCAA. Baekers is first among all active players with 87 and Rhodes is third with 57.
  • Penalty Corners: The Bears rank 16th in the nation in penalty corners per game, averaging 7.75. Cal had a rough start to the season capitalizing on penalties before scoring the game's opening goal against Penn State off a corner.
  • Goals Per Game: The Bears are 60th in the nation in goals per game, averaging 1.25. Cal broke through for multiple goals last Friday when they sent a season-high three to the back of the cage after scoring just twice in the previous three contests.
  • With the Assist: Junior forward Sophie Everett had a big game last Friday. The San Diego native notched two assists in the Penn State win after entering the contest with zero assists in 17 previous career games. She notched her first collegiate assist on the goal by Holly Pears in the second half. Her second assist came on the game-winning goal by Rhodes late in the second overtime. Her two assists are tied for third-most in the America East.
 
ABOUT THE SHARKS
LIU enters the week 0-3 with losses at UMass-Lowell, Brown and Providence. The Sharks will play Temple on Thursday before hosting the Bears. As a team, LIU has scored one goal and averages four shots per game. Their opponents are averaging 3.0 goals per game and 19.7 shots per contest. Graduate student Saarah Olton leads the team with the lone goal. Keeper Fleur Hofman has played all but 15 minutes in goal this season and has 20 saves on the year with a 2.18 goals-against average.

The Bears and Sharks have never faced one another in field hockey.
 
ABOUT THE SKYHAWKS
Stonehill is a member of the Northeast Conference and is 0-3 on the season following a 6-1 loss to Dartmouth last Sunday. As a team, the Skyhawks are averaging 6.7 shots per game and 0.3 goals per game. Senior forward Raegen Hickey has the lone goal of the year for Stonehill. Goalkeeper Shannon Conte has played and started all three games for Stonehill this season. She has 27 saves on the season and has a 3.73 goals against average.

Cal and Stonehill will face one another for the first time on Saturday.
 
UP NEXT
The Bears will begin America East Conference play with a pair of road contests at UAlbany and Vermont on September 22 and 24, respectively. The match against UAlbany is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. PT on Friday with Sunday's game against Vermont scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. PT.
