2023 NFL Season To Start With 25 Cal Affiliates
Jared Goff And Marvin Jones Jr.’s Detroit Squad Visits Defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City In Thursday’s Opener
BERKELEY – Cal has 25 former players affiliated with NFL teams at the beginning of league's 2023 campaign that starts Thursday when quarterback Jared Goff and wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. take their Detroit squad to Kansas City to visit the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium (5:20 p.m. PDT, NBC).
Goff are Jones Jr. are among 13 former Cal players on active NFL rosters with the remainder on teams that open their 2023 campaigns on Sunday, including WR Keenan Allen (Los Angeles Chargers), P Bryan Anger (Dallas), RB Christopher Brooks (Miami), S Camryn Bynum (Minnesota), OT Jake Curhan (Seattle), S Ashtyn Davis (New York Jets), S Jaylinn Hawkins (Atlanta), S Elijah Hicks (Chicago), DE Cameron Jordan (New Orleans), OL Patrick Mekari (Baltimore) and QB Aaron Rodgers (New York Jets).
Rodgers leads four former Cal players who have at least 10 seasons of experience in the league. The 39-year-old is the league's oldest active player and in his 19th NFL campaign, as well as his first with the Jets. Jordan is in his 13th NFL season, all with the Saints, while Anger is in his 12th campaign playing for his fourth team, and Allen in his 11th campaign, all with the Chargers.
Four others who played collegiately at Cal – LB Cameron Goode (Miami), RB Patrick Laird (Tampa Bay), LB Jordan Kunaszyk (Cleveland) and WR Nikko Remigio (Kansas City) – are current players affiliated with NFL teams but not on active rosters. Kunaszyk and Remigio are on injured reserve lists, while Goode and Laird are on practice squads.
Cal also has eight former players on NFL coaching staffs including three with Washington in head coach Ron Rivera, assistant linebackers coach Vincent Rivera and senior defensive assistant/safeties coach Richard Rodgers Sr. Others include Austin Clark (Miami - Defensive Line), Matt Giordano (New Orleans - Defensive Assistant), Byron Storer (Green Bay - Assistant Special Teams), Bert Watts (Carolina - Safeties) and Davis Webb (Denver - Quarterbacks).
