HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – After conceding an early goal, the California field hockey team proved to be too much for the Stonehill Skyhawks, winning 9-1 on Saturday afternoon at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Graduate transfer
Daniella Rhodes notched her fourth career hat trick and first as a Golden Bear as Cal won its third consecutive game.
Rhodes, a transfer from Liberty, led the way for the Bears' potent attack with four goals on six shots – five on goal. She is the first Cal player to score three or more goals since former Bear
Rachel Buttinger scored three against Bryant last year.
Bente Baekers and
Kitty Baccanello also scored two each. Cal (3-3) finished with a season-high 30 shots, 23 on goal. The 30 shots by the Bears are believed to be a single-game team record. The nine goals scored are the most by Cal since defeated Pacific 10-0 on September 3, 2011.
Gracie Jimenez notched her first collegiate point, recording an assist on the goal by Beakers in the third quarter. Jimenez was one of eight Bears to record an assist on the day.
Cato Geusgens had a pair – both coming on penalty corners.
The Skyhawks (0-4) seized the early momentum, putting two shots on goal in the opening 45 seconds. They would eventually take the lead in the second minute of the contest on a goal by Claudia Crowe, who deflected a shot off her stick past
Tina Jolly for her first goal of the year.
From there, the Bears took control. Cal rattled off five shots before getting the equalizer from Rhodes. The goal came off an assist from Baekers. Cal ended the first period with the go-ahead goal by
Olivia Sharratt, her first of the season. Sharatt's goal came on a penalty corner in the 12
th minute off the assist from Geusgens and
Claire Hind.
Midway through the second, Rhodes captured her hat trick with goals in the 19th and 24th minute. Baccanello added a fifth goal less than a minute later. Cal outshot the Skyhawks 12-1 in the second period.
The Bears led 5-1 at the half. Coming out of the break Cal did not take its foot off the gas. The Bears scored one more goal in the third and added three more in the fourth.
Defensively, the Bears stymied the Skyhawks. After the initial three shots and goal by Stonehill, Cal held the Skyhawks to just three more shots, none in the fourth quarter. Jolly (3-3) finished with three saves. Sophomore
Audrey Post notched a save in her first collegiate action. She replaced Jolly at the half.
"I'm conscious of the step-by-step building of a team., I'm happy with the maturity they showed today and taking on to the field the things we discussed yesterday," Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey
Shellie Onstead said. "Things that should have been on track yesterday we got correct today. They played a little more loose, we had much better communication and kept it up for 60 minutes. It all showed in how they played."
The Bears will return to New York on Sept. 22 when they take on UAlbany for an America East showdown. The Bears and Danes will square off at 11 a.m. PT. The match will feature live video and stats which can be accessed on the field hockey schedule on CalBears.com.
