Bears Head To Albuquerque For Season Opener
Cal Set To Debut 13 Newcomers At New Mexico Team Open
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – California track & field kicks off its 2024 campaign on Friday and Saturday at the New Mexico Team Open, hoping to make a strong impression right off the bat in the program's fifth year under Director of Track & Field/Cross Country
Robyne Johnson.
Last season, the Golden Bears set no fewer than 32 program indoor top-10 marks, including six school records. Most of those athletes will be competing in the Blue & Gold again this year, keeping expectations high for the team going forward.
For its season opener, Cal will debut 13 newcomers, a group that achieved six individual high school state titles in 2023. Multi-eventers
Mara Lampsas and
Luke Buddie, as well as throwers
Nick Godbehere and
Nik Iwankiw, will also compete in uniform for the first time after redshirting in their first year on campus; the latter two both appeared at the USA Track & Field (USATF) U20 Championships last summer, with Godbehere taking bronze in the shot put. Three other athletes –
Seth Johnson,
Jason Plumb and
Parker Terrill – will appear in a collegiate indoor meet for the first time after only competing outdoors last season.
The Bears will begin competition with the women's weight throw on Friday at 1:45 p.m. PT. Saturday's events start off with the women's "C" pole vault at 7:30 a.m.; Cal will not appear until 9:30 a.m. for the men's 60m hurdles preliminary rounds.
