3 School Records Highlight Day 2 In New Mexico

Mills, Foster, Magula Headline Total Of Seven Program Top 10s

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – California track & field finished off Day Two of the New Mexico Team Open in a splendid follow-up to Friday's campaign, in which the Golden Bears notched three program top-10 marks; that total rose to 10 on Saturday after seven different athletes posted top-10 results of their own, including three school records.

It was junior Makhaila Mills who posted Cal's first all-time program best, racing to a time of 7.32 in the women's invitational 60m prelims and improving in the final to a race-winning 7.27. Not to be outdone, classmate David Foster bettered his own 60m school record to a first-place 6.56 in the invitational race, in which transfer senior Chase Williams also impressed with a finals time of 6.69 (second-best in school history) after a preliminary 6.72. Finally, senior pole vaulter Skyler Magula cleared the coveted 18-foot bar with a mark of 5.51m (18-1), finishing in third place and breaking his tie with Cal great Brent Burns to overtake a program record that had stood for 32 years.

Freshman Donovan Bradley finished second in his first collegiate 60m hurdles with a time of 7.83 in the prelims and 7.82 in the final, landing him at fourth in Golden Bear history. Sophomore Ali Sahaida jumped from eighth to fifth on Cal's women's pole vault list, posting a mark of 4.15m (13-7.25), while senior Ryan Lacefield slashed her 400m personal best by 1.72 seconds to win her heat at 55.76 – the ninth-fastest time of any Cal woman past or present. Lacefield also had a good day in the unseeded 60m race, where she shaved 0.23 seconds off her previous PR to finish third at 7.59.

Three other Bears posted top-three finishes in their respective events. Freshman Myla Canty started off her Cal career by winning her flight in the women's triple jump, eventually taking third place with a leap of 12.51m (41-0.5), while senior Jazlynn Shearer won her heat in the 60m hurdles preliminary round (8.45) and finished third in the final at 8.47. On the men's side, Jeff Duensing kicked off his senior year with a third-place mark of 17.78m (58-4) in the shot put.

The men's shot put final also featured two Cal redshirt freshmen in Nick Godbehere and Nik Iwankiw, who finished fourth (17.64m/57-10.5) and sixth (17.40m/75-1), respectively. In the men's triple jump, both of Cal's freshman jumpers (Jeremiah Bolaños and Obi Nwafor) reached the final, with Bolaños placing fifth at 14.98m (49-1.75) and Nwafor seventh at 14.68m (48-2) after winning his flight. Two additional sprinters – senior George Monroe and junior Christian Trapps – set new personal bests in the unseeded 60m, respectively finishing at 6.88 and 6.91.
