BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 18 California field hockey team (6-6) dropped its road contest to Indiana (7-6), 2-1, on Friday at Deborah Tobias Field in Bloomington, Ind.
"We were compromised today with some lack of player readiness, which led to some good opportunities for our bench," Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey
Shellie Onstead said. "I'm pleased with the effort through four quarters and our willingness to compete."
Things got off to a slow start as both teams failed to find the back of the net in the opening period. A total of three shots were taken in the frame, two of which came from the Golden Bears.
Indiana scored the game's first goal at the 22:53 mark to take a 1-0 lead at the halfway mark. The Hoosier held Cal to one shot attempt in the frame and zero corner attempts in the first half.
Indiana continued to pressure the Bears' defense in the third period after totaling seven shot attempts in the frame. The Hoosiers added another goal late in the period to take a 2-0 advantage into the fourth period.
In the fourth period, the Bears finally picked up the intensity on the offensive end and recorded five shot attempts in the frame. Despite their increase in shots, Cal failed to capitalize.
Despite conceding two goals, Junior
Tina Jolly had an impressive outing after recording a season-high eight saves.
Cal will end its four-game road stint against No. 17 Iowa on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT, at Grant Field in Iowa City, Ia.
