BERKELEY, Calif. – The California field hockey team (7-8) fell to Wake Forest (7-9), 3-2, in double overtime on Sunday at Underhill Field in Berkeley, Calif.
"I assume it was entertaining from the stands. I always have a different perspective from the sideline. We need to learn how to close out a game. When we went into overtime, I said to the team 'We need this going forward', since we haven't played many overtime games," Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey
Shellie Onstead said. "I'm going to look at it as a positive that we gained the experience but it is disappointing to have that kind of outcome on Senior Day."
Neither team mustered up much on the offensive end in the opening period, as the game remained scoreless throughout the frame. The action began to pick in the second quarter after Freshman
Liz Klompmaker scored her first goal at the 25:43 mark to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead. Junior
Olivia Sharratt assisted on the play. In the final minute of the first half, Wake Forest scored the game-tying goal to even the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Klompmaker broke the tie early in the third period as she found the back of the net for the 15th time of the season. Graduate student
Carmel van Dijk assisted on the play. The Bears had a dominating quarter after outshooting the Demon Deacons (5-2) and racking up penalty corners (6-1) in the frame en route to holding a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth period.
The Bears held the advantage for most of the fourth quarter until the Deacs scored a goal in the final three minutes to force overtime. Cal was aggressive in the first overtime after totaling five shot attempts and two corners but failed to find the back of the net. Wake Forest only needed two minutes in the second overtime to secure the game-winning goal after its first shot attempt was unsuccessful.
The game saw 38 shot attempts, 17 corners and seven saves.
Cal will complete the regular season on the road against a familiar foe, Stanford, on Thursday.
