Cal Softball Signs 2025 Class

4 Bears Head To Berkeley Next Fall

BERKELEY – The California softball team signed four incoming freshmen in the Class of 2025, announced Wednesday by head coach Chelsea Spencer, who continues to find success in the California recruiting pipeline as all four signees decided to remain close to home, like a year ago, as she welcomes her fifth recruiting class.

"We believe the 2025 class is one of the top classes in the country," Spencer said. "We have four exceptional athletes coming in that are going to make an impact on our program from day one. They are all extremely athletic, competitive, and have high academics. They come from great families and fit the mold in all aspects of what it means to be a Bear. The future of Cal softball is going to be very bright. Go Bears!"

Jade Diaz, a 5-foot-4 infielder from Placentia, California, joins the Bears from Canyon High School in Anaheim Hills. She helped lead her team to an all-league championship in 2023 and was named to the all-league first team during the 2022-23 season. Diaz's stellar play earned her the 2022-23 Best Offensive Player of the Year award.

Spencer on Diaz…
"Jade is a middle infielder with a strong arm, great range, and glove work that can pick a ball at any angle. For her size, she can hit the ball with a ton of power and beat out an infield single if needed. Her IQ is incredible and will only get better as she gets older. We can't wait to get California across her chest and get after it."

Sophia Everett, a 5-foot-7 outfielder from San Rafael joins the Bears from San Rafael High School. She is a three-time player of the year award winner, a three-time all-league first-team recipient and a one-time second-team honoree after totaling career marks of a .500 batting average, .500 on-base percentage and a 1.059 slugging percentage while accumulating 49 runs, 42 hits, 29 stolen bases and 12 home runs.

Spencer on Everett…
"Sophia is one of the top centerfielders in the 2025 class. What makes her different from most athletes is her mental game and commitment to excellence. She can play multiple positions. Offensively, she has multiple tools with a high IQ on the bases. She's the one you want on your team and the person you hate to play against, which makes her a perfect fit for our program. We are extremely excited to have her."

Nina Peyton-Johnson, a 5-foot-8 infielder from Van Nuys joins the Bears from Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth. During her freshman year, she was named to the all-league first team and all-city while earning All-Mission League recognition during her junior year.

Spencer on Peyton-Johnson…
"Nina is an offensive powerhouse. She hits the ball with incredible power and can run the bases with the best of them. With her cool demeanor, she plays with confidence and knows she can catch any ball thrown at her. We are excited to get her on the field."

Mya McGowan, a 5-foot-10 pitcher from Poway joins the Bears from Poway High School. She has racked up numerous accolades during her high school career, including three MVP awards, three San Diego All-CIF First-Team selections, two CA All-State First-Team selections, 2023 CA Sophomore of the Year and the 2024 Palomar League Pitcher of the Year. McGowan has totaled 373 strikeouts, 30 RBIs and 19 home runs in her first three seasons.

Spencer on McGowan…
"Mya is one of the most athletic competitors in her class. She is the top two-way player in the country, whether on the mound or in the box. She's the one you want when the game is on the line. She can play any position on the field when she's not pitching. She can hit the long ball while putting down a bunt and beating it out. She's a true right-handed threat in the box. She will make a direct impact on our team and her competitive drive fits what it means to be a Bear. We cannot wait to get her on the field."
