Blue Comes From Behind To Finish Fall World Series Sweep
Winners Score NIne Runs In Final Three Innings Of 9-7 Victory
PJ Moutzouridis' two-run single in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Blue squad to a 9-7 victory Thursday to complete a three-game sweep of the Gold team in Cal's annual Fall World Series. The Blue squad had won Games 1 and 2 last Friday and Saturday.
The Blue squad trailed 5-0 after six innings but scored five times in the top of the seventh to tie the score at 5-5 with Moutzaridis and
Nico Button each coming up with two-run singles to get the Blue squad within one before
Jacob French's RBI single tied the contest.
The Gold team got a runner to third in the bottom of the seventh when
Carl Schmidt walked with one out and moved to third on a two-out throwing error by eventual winning pitcher
Spencer Dessart. But Dessart left Schmidt stranded on third when he retired
Ryan Tayman on a groundout to send the game to extra innings.
Both teams scored a single run in the eighth inning of the scheduled seven-inning contest after starting the first extra inning with a runner on second and nobody out. The Blue squad scored in the top half of the frame on
Jack Johnston's safety squeeze before the Gold team answered with
Cade Campbell's two-out, two-strike RBI single in the bottom of the frame to send the game to a second extra frame.
The teams started the ninth inning with the bases loaded and one out, and after Moutzouridis delivered his two-run single as the first batter in the top of the frame, the Blue squad picked up an insurance run when Moutzouridis scored on a two-out error.
The Gold team got one run on
Jarren Advincula's one-out sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth but Dessart struck out Schmidt with the tying run on second base to end the wild game.
Moutzouridis finished 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Button (2-4, 2 RBI) was the only other Blue player with more than one hit or multiple RBIs.
Advincula (2-4, HR, 2 RBI) was the only Gold player with more than one hit including a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the first.
Ryan Tayman's two-run shot three batters later gave the Gold squad an early 3-0 advantage.
The game's most impressive pitching performance was turned in by Gold starter
Austin Turkington, who threw five one-hit scoreless frames and faced just 17 batters. Turkington retired the final 10 he faced.
"We saw a bunch of guys in competitive spots, and I think that's the purpose of the series," head coach
Mike Neu said. "It was probably our best game of the fall competitively so that's a good way to finish."
