The California field hockey team heads east for its first-ever appearance in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship after qualifying in its first season in the league. The eighth-seeded Golden Bears will face off against the No. 1-seeded and ACC regular season champion North Carolina on Tuesday for a chance to advance to the semifinals. Coverage will be available on ACCNX and via live stats.
As a team, the Golden Bears finished the regular season leading the conference in defensive saves (15), second in saves per game (5.50), fourth in assists per game (1.81) and fifth in points per game (5.31), save percentage (0.72) and scoring average (1.82).
A FIRST FOR EVERYTHING
In their first season as a member of the ACC, the Bears qualified for their first appearance in the conference tournament. A year ago, in its final season as a member of the America East Conference, Cal claimed its first America East Tournament title, which also clinched its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2006.
ABOUT THE TAR HEELS
North Carolina enters the ACC Championship as the No. 1 seed after completing the regular season unbeaten. The Tar Heels defeated then-No. 6 Duke in their last outing to clinch the regular season ACC title. It will be the eighth meeting between the two teams and second of the season. North Carolina has topped the Bears in each contest, including the 3-1 victory earlier this season on Oct. 6.
LAST TIME OUT
Cal fell to Stanford, 3-1, in its regular season finale on Thursday. The game remained scoreless after a tightly contested first half, which saw 14 shot attempts and six corners. The Golden Bears accounted for 10 shots and five corner attempts during that span. Stanford held Cal scoreless after totaling six saves in the first half. The Cardinal took control of the game in the third quarter after scoring three goals by three different players. Stanford remained in front for the remainder of the game. Graduate student
Canisha van Duyn scored her third goal of the season in the final minute to cut into the deficit.
ACC HONORS
On Tuesday, freshman
Liz Klompmaker was tabbed the ACC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a pair of goals in both outings against Louisville and Wake Forest, which marked the fifth and sixth times she scored at least two goals in a single game this season. The forward is currently tied for second in the conference in both goals (15) and game-winning goals (5) and is fourth in points (31). Klompmaker is the first Golden Bear to earn a conference honor this season.
300 OF THEM
Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey
Shellie Onstead earned her 300th career win in a win over Louisville on Oct. 25. The victory also marked the Bears' first-ever ACC victory. Freshman
Liz Klompmaker poured in two goals in the opening period to give Cal the early lead. The Cardinals found the back of the net late in the first half but couldn't overcome its deficit as the Bears held on to the 2-1 victory.
30 FOR ONSTEAD
Shellie Onstead is in her 30th season as the Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey. Onstead has a career record of 300-241 and has guided the Bears to 12 conference championships. She is a six-time NorPac Coach of the Year and has led Cal to six NCAA Tournament appearances. Onstead served as an assistant coach for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team and was inducted into the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982. Onstead played at Cal from 1980-82 and was the program's first All-America player.
