PHOENIX – The California softball team recorded 20 combined hits in two games on the way to a 6-1 victory over Cal State Fullerton and a 7-4 win at Grand Canyon at the GCU Softball Stadium on Friday.
The Golden Bears (7-1) were led by a combined one-run effort in the circle from
Anna Reimers and
Haylei Archer vs. the Titans and four hits on the day off the bat of
Mika Lee.
Game 1: Cal 6, Cal State Fullerton 1
Cal broke through first in the second inning, thanks to three straight singles and a Lee RBI sacrifice fly. Reimers had her stuff working the first time through the Titan lineup, allowing just a pair of hits and no runs with a couple of strikeouts.
CSUF knotted the scoreboard at 1-1 in the fourth with a solo Hannah Becerra home run, but the Bears had an answer right away in the home half of the inning.
Kaylee Pond started things off with a double and Anders hit her second home run of the season, a 2-run shot to make it 3-1 after four complete frames.
Archer took over in relief to start the fifth and was immediately effective. After allowing a pair of singles, the senior retired seven straight Titans. Cal got insurance in the sixth thanks to a 2-run
Kyndal Todd triple and a
Mika Lee RBI single. Reimers (2-0) earned her second win of the season, while Anders and Todd both recorded a pair of hits.
Game 2: Cal 7, Grand Canyon 4
Starter
Randi Roelling was in a groove early, needing only 10 pitches to set the Lopes down in order in the first. Cal jumped in front in the second inning on Lee's third homer of the season, a solo shot to center as the Bears led 1-0 after two innings.
The home run derby continued in the fourth with Butler hitting a solo shot and
Alexis Bishop crushing her first of the season, a 2-run moonshot to make it 4-0, Cal. Anders then doubled in the fifth to plate Lee, making it a five-run lead.
The Lopes battled back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs on five hits to make it a one-run game heading to the sixth.
Annabel Teperson replaced Roelling during the inning, before the freshman re-entered to get a strikeout and strand two Lope base runners. As they have early in the season, Cal put the pressure right back on in the next frame.
RBI singles from Pond and Butler pushed the Bears' lead back to 7-4 with Roelling working around a two-out single to leave another GCU runner on base. She retired the Lopes in order to end the game in the seventh.
