Archer’s Gem Leads No. 20 Cal Past UC Davis

Senior Records Two-Hit Shutout In 14th Straight Win

BERKELEY – Haylei Archer didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning on the way to a two-hit shutout, leading the No. 20 California softball team to a 1-0 win on Wednesday in the home opener at Levine-Fricke Field.

The Golden Bears (16-1) needed only a first-inning RBI groundout off the bat of Acacia Anders to plate the game-winning run against UC Davis ace Kenedi Brown. Tatum Anzaldo went 2-for-3 on the afternoon, pacing the offense.

Cal jumped on Brown right away, scoring a run on two hits by attacking first pitches. Anzaldo singled and Kaylee Pond doubled to put two in scoring position with just one out, before Anders got the job done with the RBI groundout to first.

Archer had her stuff working the entire game, allowing just a pair of walks with three strikeouts through four. The senior from Columbus, New Jersey kept it going into the sixth, finally allowing her first hit of the day on a Leah Polson two-out single.

UC Davis got its second hit of the day to start the seventh and had the tying run at third with one out after a stolen base and a wild pitch, but Archer recorded a groundout to first and a big strikeout, her sixth of the game, to end it.
