Instagram account Wednesday his medical retirement from football.

Brett Johnson, DL, 6-5, 295 (Phoenix, Ariz./California/Desert Vista HS)
– Played in 29 games with 25 starts at Cal over five campaigns from 2019-23 despite missing two full seasons in 2021 and 2022 due to separate injuries suffered in an automobile accident in April 2021 and training camp in August 2022 before returning to action in 2023
– Posted career totals of 69 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss (-28 yards), 3.5 sacks (-21 yards), two pass breakups, one quarterback hurry and two fumble recoveries
– A national semifinalist for the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year Award presented by College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) in association with The Associated Press (AP) and the Fiesta Bowl Organization that recognizes college football student-athletes from all divisions for overcoming injury, illness or other circumstances
– Started each of Cal's 12 regular-season games in 2023 and contributed 23 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss (-2 yards) and 0.5 sacks (-2 yards), as well as a career-high-tying one pass breakup and one fumble recovery
– Earned the CalHOPE Courage Award from College Sports Communicators In association with The Associated Press for December 2023
– Started all four games as a 2020 sophomore in a season shortened by COVID-19 and was tied for third on the team and first among defensive linemen with 20 tackles, while adding 2.5 tackles for loss (-8 yards) and 1.5 sacks (-7 yards), and a career-high-tying one pass breakup
– Narned a third-team Freshman All-American and earned third-team All-Pac-12 honors from Pro Football Focus as a 2019 true freshman when he played in all 13 games with nine starts including seven of the last eight contests and contributed career highs of 26 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss (career-high -18 yards), as well as a career-high-tying 1.5 sacks (career-high -12 yards), his lone career quarterback hurry and a career-high-tying one fumble recovery
