INSIDE THE MATCHUP
- Cal is seeking its first regular-season sweep of UCLA since 2011-12.
- The last time Cal bested UCLA at home was on Feb. 25, 2016, a 75-63 victory in front of a crowd of 11,858.
- The Bears snapped an 11-game skid against UCLA with their 66-57 road win on Jan. 6. The win snapped a handful of unfriendly streaks:
- Was Cal's first win in Pauley Pavilion since 2010.
- Ended Cal's 16-game road losing streak.
- Ended Cal's 18-game Pac-12 regular-season losing streak.
- In Cal's wire-to-wire win at UCLA on Jan. 6, Jaylon Tyson scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half and Fardaws Aimaq registered a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double.
- Cal and UCLA have previously met 250 times on the hardwood. They're an even 63-63 against one another in Berkeley.
PETE NEWELL CLASSIC
- Bill McClintock, a 2021 California Athletics Hall of Fame inductee and member of the Bears' 1959 NCAA championship squad and 1960 NCAA runner-up team, is the 2023-24 recipient of the Pete Newell Career Achievement Award. He will receive the award during the first half of Saturday's game.
- The award honors the legacy of Cal's Hall of Fame basketball coach and the contributions Newell made to the program. The career achievement award is presented annually to a Cal men's basketball alumnus who has distinguished himself in his career accomplishments, upholding the highest ideals of Newell and the University of California.
LAST TIME
- Cal won for the third straight time at home, defeating USC 83-77 in overtime in front of a sold-out crowd of 11,801 on Wednesday night.
- It was Cal's largest attendance and first sellout since Jan. 29, 2017 when 11,877 were present for Cal's 66-55 win against Stanford.
- Jaylon Tyson posted his eighth double-double of the season with 27 points and 10 rebounds.
- Jalen Celestine scored six of his 11 points in overtime.
- Fardaws Aimaq totaled 15 points, 20 rebounds, five assists and three blocks; he's the only major-conference player with such a stat line this season and is the only Pac-12 player to do so since at least the 1996-97 season.
- Celestine hit a tie-breaking 3-pointer that made it 75-72 with 1:30 left in overtime and then made three free throws in the last 24 seconds. The Trojans missed their last three shots, including Aimaq's block on Isaiah Collier with 27 seconds left and the Golden Bears up 80-77.
NOTEWORTHY
- Cal has played 17 games decided by single digits this season – including nine by five points or fewer – the most in the country. Cal has won three straight single-digit contests since Jan. 20 after winning just four of its first 14.
- The Bears have won four of their last five home games, and are 8-5 in Haas Pavilion this season.
- Cal averages 75.6 PPG this season, an 11.3-point increase from its 64.3 PPG average over the past six seasons (2017-23). It's also a 17.3-point jump from last season's 58.3 PPG.
- Cal has scored 80-plus points five times in Pac-12 play, it's most since the 2010-11 season (seven times).
- The Bears are 7-2 when holding their opponent to fewer than 75 points. They're allowing 68.9 PPG in 10 wins, compared to 82.4 PPG in 13 losses.
- Jaylon Tyson is one of 10 candidates shortlisted for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award. Tyson, who averages 20.3 PPG, 7.6 RPG and 3.3 APG, is one of three players nationally – and the only player among the Erving Award's 10 candidates – to average those figures or better.
- Tyson is the first Cal player with 14 games of 20 points or more in a single season since Allen Crabbe (15) in 2012-13.
- Fardaws Aimaq is one of only two Pac-12 players and five major-conference players averaging a double-double (15.3 PPG, 11.0 RPG). His 15 double-doubles lead the conference and are tied for the fourth most in the country.
- Jalen Cone is averaging 19.5 PPG on 66.7% shooting – 12 of 18 from the floor and 8 of 12 from 3-point range – the past two games. Cone's 6-of-9 shooting effort against USC was the first time in 34 career 20-point games that he's done so on fewer than 10 field-goal attempts.
- Keonte Kennedy has at least one steal in 10 straight games and recently totaled 10 steals in a three-game span between Jan. 26-Feb. 3.
- Jalen Celestine's 48.3% clip from 3-point range is tied for the best among qualified Pac-12 players. He's 28 of 58 for the season and has made at least two 3-pointers in each of the past three games.
- Cal has knocked down at least 10 3-pointers nine times this season, including 11 in each of its past two games on a combined 45.8% clip (22 of 48). The Bears are third in the Pac-12 with 8.8 3-point makes per game and are first in attempts (25.5). They averaged just 4.9 makes and 16.9 attempts per game last season, both ranking last in the conference.
- Cal's 30 turnovers committed across five games between Jan. 10-26 were the fewest by a Pac-12 team in a five-game span since at least 1996-97.
