LAS VEGAS – Ohio State scored eight runs in the first three innings as walks plagued the California baseball team in the opener of the Las Vegas Classic. The Golden Bears scored four runs late, but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Buckeyes 9-4 Friday evening at the Las Vegas Ballpark.
Â
Ohio State's (5-4) starting pitcher Landon Beidelschies (2-1) worked quickly and methodically through the Cal lineup, retiring the first eight batters he faced. Beidelschies needed just 18 pitches to get the first six outs and took a no-hitter into the fifth. He finished the day going six complete, scattering four hits, and two runs, with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Cal (7-2) finished the night with eight hits, including a pair of long home runs.
Caleb Lomavita got the Bears on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the sixth inning. It was his fifth of the year and 28th of his career. The Bears have hit two or more home runs in six of their nine games this season.
Â
The Buckeyes scored three in the bottom of the first inning, two coming off an RBI double by Matthew Graveline. After going down quietly in the second, Ohio State scored five more runs in the third. Three coming on a bases-clearing triple from Trey Lipsey to make it 8-0.

Freshman
Ryan Tayman got the first hit of the game for the Bears in the top of the fifth inning, pulling a ball down the left-field line for a leadoff single. He finished the night 1-for-3.
