EUGENE, ORE. – The California baseball team got the leadoff runner aboard in six of the nine innings but could not get the clutch hit it needed to mount a rally as host Oregon took the series with a 10-3 win on Sunday afternoon at PK Park.
Cal (12-5, 4-2 Pac-12) hit just 4-for-22 with runners on base and was 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position. The Bears got the leadoff man aboard in the first four innings but were held to a single run.
Oregon (13-6, 4-2) scored six runs during that same stretch with five of them coming with two outs. The Ducks used the long ball to put the game away late. A four-run eighth inning silenced any chance of a comeback for the Bears. Home runs from Jacob Walsh, Anson Aroz, and Ryan Cooney provided the thunder in the fame.
Taking the loss for the Golden Bears was starter
Tom Mayer (0-2). Mayer ran into trouble in the bottom of the first, surrendering three runs early. With two out Bennett Thompson singled through the left side to score the game's opening run. Walsh followed that up with the first of his two home runs.
Mayer finished the day going 3.2 innings, allowing five hits, six runs – all earned, with two walks and three strikeouts.
Tyler Stasiowski took the ball in the fourth and pitched brilliantly, going 2.1 innings surrendering a hit, no runs, with three strikeouts.
The winning pitcher was starter Kevin Seitter (2-0). Seitter went five complete, scattering four hits, a run, and a walk, while striking out six. The save went to Logan Mercado (3) who pitched the final two innings, scattering two hits with no runs and two strikeouts.
Trailing 6-1 in the seventh inning, the Bears got some momentum.
Seth Gwynn singled up the middle to open the inning. An infield single for
PJ Moutzouridis put runners at the corners with two outs for
Rodney Green Jr. who smashed a ball down the right field line for a 2-run triple. Green finished the afternoon 1-for-3 with two RBIs, a pair of walks, and a stolen base.
Moutzouridis had his third three-hit game of the year. He went 3-for-5 with a double.
Max Handron went 2-for-4 with a double.
Peyton Schulze also had a pair of hits.
Jarren Advincula went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a double.
On Tuesday afternoon, Cal returns to the Bay Area for a nonconference clash against San Francisco. The game between the Beas and Dons is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch from Benedetti Diamond.
