Fang, Bears Finish Strong At Pauma Valley Invitational
No. 18 Cal Shoots 10-Under-Par In Final Round To Place 5th
PAUMA VALLEY – The No. 18 California men's golf team carded a tournament-low 10-under-par 274 on Tuesday to climb four spots and finish in fifth place at the Pauma Valley Invitational. Freshman
Ethan Fang (-8) led the way, tying his 18-hole collegiate low with a 6-under 65 in the third round to tie for second individually.
The Golden Bears (847, -5) were in ninth after shooting 5-over-par (288-285) across the first 36 holes on Monday, but a well-rounded team effort in the third round – four scores of even-par 71 or lower – vaulted them up the standings. No. 3 Vanderbilt (-20) won the title, placing ahead of San Diego (-13), Oklahoma State (-13) and Oklahoma (-8).
Fang held a three-way share of the individual title down to the wire before Oklahoma State's Jonas Baumgartner (-9) sunk a birdie on hole 18 to clinch the victory. It was the lowest finish of Fang's young collegiate career and his third top-10 finish in four events played this spring. The Golden Bear rookie started his day with three consecutive birdies on holes 10-12 and after going bogey-birdie-bogey-birdie to close the back nine, Fang carded a 3-under 33 on the front nine.
Four Bears –
Kuangyu (Tony) Chen,
Eric Lee,
Daniel Heo and
Jeewon Park, the former playing as an individual – tied for 37th at 3-over (216). Lee jumped 30 spots on the individual leaderboard Tuesday with a bogey-free 4-under 67 in the final round.
Nathan Wang, who tied for 49th overall, contributed to Cal's team score Tuesday with an even-par 71.
It was Cal's sixth top-five finish in eight stroke play events this season.
