Challenge Awaits At Cabo Collegiate
No. 18 Cal Among 9 Top-20 Teams Competing In Cabo
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico â The No. 18 California men's golf team is one of nine top-20 programs that will compete in the Cabo Collegiate starting on Sunday at Twin Dolphin Club. The three-day, 54-hole tournament extends through Tuesday with a shotgun start each day at 7:30 a.m. PST/8:30 a.m. MST.

CHIP SHOTS
- The Cabo Collegiate boasts one of the top fields in the country, with nine top-20 teams â including six ranked in the top 10 â competing.
- Cal owns a 68-12-1 record with five top-three finishes and a pair of victories in six stroke-play events this season. The two victories came back-to-back in October at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and the Cal Poly Invitational.
- The Golden Bears most recently shot a blistering 17-under-par 271 in the final round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate to climb out of seventh place and finish second.
- Kuangyu (Tony) Chen and Ethan Fang â Cal's No. 1 and 2 in Cabo â finished in ties for third and eighth, respectively, at the Burns Intercollegiate.
- Chen is ranked 57th nationally and has five top-15 finishes in six events this season, including a win at the Cal Poly Invitational on Oct. 30-31.
- Fang has earned consecutive top-10 individual finishes this spring, taking ninth at the Southwestern Invitational on Jan. 29-31 prior to his eighth-place finish at the Burns.
- Sampson Zheng, Cal's No. 3 in Cabo, is No. 25 in the latest 2024 PGA Tour University ranking, released Feb. 28. He's competed in four of Cal's six stroke-play events and owns a 71.08 scoring average through 12 rounds. Zheng earned GCAA/PING All-America Second Team honors in 2022-23 after averaging 69.83 strokes over 31 rounds.
- Nathan Wang was instrumental in Cal's two wins in the fall, finishing third in the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and ninth at the Cal Poly Invitational. He's shot under par in three of four tournaments this season and will play as Cal's No. 4 in Cabo.
- Three Bears â Eric Lee, Zheng and Tony Chen â earned Pac-12 Golfer of the Week honors in the fall. All three will compete in Cabo.
- Cal last competed at the Cabo Collegiate in 2022, placing eighth with a 16-under 836. Chen and Zheng finished 31st and 47th, respectively, in the 2022 event.
