LAS VEGAS – The California baseball team scored six of its seven runs late, but the Golden Bears could not get the shutdown inning they desperately needed as Pitt (8-1) scored in all but two innings, winning 19-7 on Sunday evening at the Las Vegas Ballpark.
Cal (7-3) finished the day with seven runs on 10 hits.
Peyton Schulze had a strong night, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs.
PJ Moutzouridis had the other big hit of the evening for the Bears, smashing a three-run home run in the eighth – his second of the year.
Tom Mayer (0-1) took the loss. He went just 2.2 innings, surrendering three hits, four runs, three walks and three strikeouts. Walks were again an issue for the Bears on Sunday. Cal walked a season-high 12 base runners that led to seven runs. Cal also struggled to get the final out with Pitt going 8-for-17, scoring 11 of their 19 runs with two outs.
The win went to starter Jake Sokol (2-0) who went six complete, striking out eight. He scattered three hits and three walks and only surrendered one run. The save went to Ryan Reed (1) who went the final three innings.
Cal scored the game's opening run in the bottom of the first inning. Schulze sent a double the other way that scored Lomavita from first. Cal got runners at the corners but could not add on.
The Panthers scored one in the second, three in the third, and blew it open in the fifth thanks to a three-run home run from Ryan Zuckerman – part of a four-run inning for Pitt. Catcher Jayden Melendez had a big offensive night, going 2-for-5 with two home runs. Luke Cantrell and Jake Kendro also hit home runs.
Caleb Lomavita and
Alec Ritch joined Schulze with multiple hits.
Max Handron went 1-for-3 with a double and two walks.
The Bears return to Berkeley and begin a four-game homestand starting with a non-conference clash against rival Stanford. Tuesday's game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch and will be televised on Pac-12 Network.
