Cal Sweeps Sunday Doubleheader From Boise State

BERKELEY – The No. 20 California softball team crushed seven home runs on the way to a 6-4 and 8-2 doubleheader sweep of Boise State on Sunday at Levine-Fricke Field to close out the DeMarini Invitational.

Kaylee Pond collected three extra-base hits with five RBI and Tianna Bell hit two home runs to lead the Golden Bears (19-2). Lagi Quiroga added a 3-for-3 day with a home run and drew three walks for Cal. The Broncos (11-10) were led by two hits and three RBI from Leah McAnally.

Game 1: Cal 6, Boise State 4
The Bears started hot after Saturday's upset win over No. 3/5 Georgia, building a 6-1 advantage after three on 2-run homers off the bat of Pond and Elon Butler. Haylei Archer got the start in the circle and was on cruise control through four, allowing just one run on four hits.

Boise tried to rally in the fifth, scoring two runs on a McAnally double to make it 6-3, Cal, as the Bears went to the bullpen for Ashanti McDade. The Broncos got within two on an RBI base hit, but McDade used a lineout and flyout to strand the potential game-tying run on base.

McDade retired seven of the last eight she faced to earn her first save of the season and give Archer her third win of the year.

Game 2: Cal 8, Boise State 2
Cal took the lead early in the game once again, scoring a run in the first on a Pond sacrifice fly. After the Broncos tied the game in the second inning off of starter Anna Reimers, the Bears built another lead in the third.

Alyssa Herrera hit her first career home run, a solo shot to right field, before Pond came through with an RBI double down the left field line to make it 3-1. The Bears executed a perfect double steal to score a run in the fourth and Pond put a cap on her day with a second straight RBI double for a 6-1 lead.

Boise hit a solo home run in the sixth to make it a 7-2 ballgame and force Cal to go to Annabel Teperson in the circle. The Novato native finished off the Broncos, allowing just one hit with three walks to give Cal its third straight win.
