Cal Looks To Remain Perfect At Home

BERKELEY – The California baseball team begins Pac-12 play when UCLA comes to Stu Gordon Stadium for a three-game series starting Friday starting at 6:05 p.m. All three games will be live streamed.
 
The Bears (8-3) got back into the win column on Tuesday evening with a 5-0 shutout of rival Stanford in a nonconference game. Cal improved its home winning streak to six games to open the 2024 season.  
 
UCLA (5-6) is coming off a 2-0 loss at Long Beach State and has lost three in a row. The Bruins, who are 0-4 on the road this year, are hitting .253 (91-for-359) with seven home runs and sport a staff ERA of 4.31 with an opponent batting average of .253.

  • The Bears are amidst a four-game homestand and have played six of their last eight games at the friendly confines of Stu Gordon Stadium. Cal is a perfect 6-0 at home, hitting .266 as a team while boasting an ERA of 2.67 with just 16 earned runs allowed in 54.0 innings pitched at home.
  • Cal had four pitchers throw a combined six-hit shutout of Stanford on Tuesday. It is the second midweek shutout of the season for Cal, which blanked visiting Nevada 8-0 on Feb. 21 
  • The Bears were held without a home run for just the second time all season Tuesday, ending a streak of 10 consecutive games with a least one home run hit. The Bears were last held without a home run in 2024 season opener against Kansas State – a game Cal won 6-3. The Bears are 2-0 when they do not hit a home run and are 6-3 when they do.
  • Cal's pitching staff continues to shine under the lights. After Tuesday's win over the Cardinal, the Bears are 5-1 with a 2.04 ERA in night games. In 44.0 innings pitched in such games, the Bears have allowed just 40 hits, 12 earned runs and 25 walks while recording 63 strikeouts. Their opponents are hitting just .207 with three home runs in night games.
  • Three Golden Bears have had great success against UCLA. Rodney Green Jr. is hitting .444 (12-for-27) in his career against UCLA with 10 runs scored, five home runs and six RBI. Max Handron went off on the Bruins in Southern California last year, hitting .375 with four home runs. Peyton Schulze thrived in the same series last year, hitting .426 with two doubles and five RBI against the Bruins.
  • Head coach Mike Neu is one win away from his 200th career victory. Neu boasts a record of 159-137 (.537) in seven years at Cal's helm after going 40-65 in his two years in Stockton (199-202 overall, .496). His 159 wins at Cal already rank fifth in program history behind legendary coaches George Wolfman (484 wins), David Esquer (525 wins), Clint Evans (547 wins) and Bob Milano (682 wins).
 
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Friday will be the 374th meeting between the Bears and Bruins. UCLA owns a 187-185 advantage in the series that dates back to 1928. Cal is 10-9 against the Bruins under Neu, most recently earning a series sweep in Los Angeles last season. It was the first series sweep over UCLA in Los Angeles since 1991.
 
UP NEXT
Cal will return to the road next week with its first true road series of the season at Oregon. The series starts on Friday, March 15 at 5:05 p.m. from PK Park in Eugene. All three games against the Ducks will be live-streamed.
