CAREFREE, Ariz. – No. 21 California earned its best finish at the Pac-12 Men's Golf Championship since 2016 as it placed second overall on Sunday at Desert Forest Golf Club. Three Golden Bears – Ethan Fang, Sampson Zheng and Eric Lee – finished third, sixth and 13th individually, respectively, to lead a Cal lineup that finished the three-day, 72-hole tournament at 43-over-par (368-370-360-365 – 1463).
 
Tournament host and third-ranked Arizona State (+27) won the Pac-12 title by 16 strokes, using a dominant fourth-round 3-under-par 352 to pull away from Cal and the rest of the conference field. Cal entered the final round trailing the Sun Devils by just three shots, but could not keep pace. Stanford (+44) – led by individual medalist Karl Vilips (-2) – Washington (+48) and Oregon (+48) rounded out the top five.
 
Fang (+2) started the day in sole possession of second place after shooting 71-70-71 through the first three rounds. The freshman, who earned his fourth top-10 finish in seven events played this spring, was in contention for individual medalist honors until a triple-bogey on hole 13. He rebounded with a birdie on 16 and ended the round at 3-over 74. Fang's tie for third is the best individual finish by a Golden Bear at the Pac-12 Championship since Collin Morikawa was individual medalist in 2019.
 
Despite back-to-back bogeys to end the day, Zheng (+4) carded four birdies on 5, 9, 14 and 16 to finish at 1-over 72. The senior's tie for sixth was his best career finish at Pac-12s, following two consecutive 10th-place finishes in 2022 and 2023. Lee (+10) also shot 1-over- 72 on Sunday to secure his fifth top-15 finish on the season.
 
Jeewon Park (+14) earned his first top-30 finish of the year with a 2-over 73 on Sunday to tie for 29th. After a 3-over front nine, the senior responded with a 1-under 35 on the back nine, keyed by birdies on 11, 14 and 16.
 
Cal's second-place finish is its best under Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun.
 
UP NEXT
The Golden Bears – likely postseason bound for the second straight year – will be tuned into the NCAA Men's Golf Selection Show on Golf Channel at 11 a.m. PT Wednesday. NCAA Regional play takes place May 13-15 at six regional sites.
