BERKELEY – Jessica Alsola led a strong performance by the 10th-ranked California women's tennis team in a 6-1 drubbing of No. 59 Oregon on Friday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Cal junior clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Nina Geissler and was one of five Golden Bears to prevail in straight sets in singles.
Â
The Bears wrapped up the match in a relatively quick two hours and 10 minutes.
Â
"We did a really good job starting in the doubles, and we had a couple of new pairings out there on court two and court three," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "They did a really good job considering they hadn't really practiced much together. We carried that momentum into the singles, winning five of six first sets. One of the things we've been talking about is closing out matches quicker, and I think we did. I was most pleased with that."
Â
The Bears improved their record to 13-4 (6-1 Pac-12). The Ducks are 10-9 (1-6).
Â
Alsola also partnered with
Katja Wiersholm to clinch the doubles point, with the duo defeating Tilde Jagare and Uxia Martinez Moral, 6-1, on court two. The 22nd-ranked
Hannah Viller Moeller and
Mao Mushika posted a 6-2 win over Jo-Yee Chan and Sophie Luescher at court one before Alsola and Wiersholm secured the point to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
Â
Wiersholm and Alsola hadn't played together as a tandem since November. But the Bears – who competed in the NCAA Doubles Championship and had a final ranking of No. 18 last season – didn't miss a beat.
Â
"Katja's a really good doubles player, and we have good chemistry together," Alsola said. "Our games really complement each other."
Â
Cal junior
Lan Mi captured her team-high 34th singles win of the season with a 6-3, 6-3 result over Candela Aparisi on court six, and then
Berta Passola Folch followed with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Karin Young on court five to give Cal a 3-0 lead. The 74th-ranked Alsola posted her court-two win – her first clinching win of the season - to give the Bears the overall victory.
Â
Playing on court one, the 44th-ranked Viller Moeller bested Luescher, 6-2, 6-3, and Wiersholm, ranked 65th, topped Jo-Yee Chan, 6-4, 6-3, on court three to build a 6-0 advantage for the Bears.
Â
In the last match, Mushika, a freshman, fell to Martinez Moral, an Oregon senior, 6-4, 6-3, on court four to make the final score 6-1.
Â
Cal next hosts third-ranked Pepperdine on Saturday at noon PT.
