Wildcats Complete The Sweep

Arizona Scores Five Runs With 2 Outs

BERKELEY – Two out hits were the difference as Arizona completed the sweep over the California baseball team on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats scored five of their seven runs after the first two outs were recorded, defeating the Bears 7-3 at Stu Gordon Stadium.

Cal (16-13, 5-10 Pac-12) got into trouble in the top of the first inning. Starter Oliver Boone (1-1) recorded two quick outs, but a 2-out walk and back-to-back hits allowed Arizona (17-13, 10-5) to score the game's first runs.

Boone got into trouble again in the second inning, loading the bases all after getting the first two outs. He was able to get out of the jam unscathed getting a strikeout. He lasted just two innings allowing two hits, two runs, with four walks and two strikeouts.

Arizona starter Clark Candiotti (3-1) went 5.0 complete and aside from a home run to Ryan Tayman and an RBI double to Jarren Advincula, largely kept the Golden Bear offense quiet. Candiotti allowed six hits, with two earned runs, no walks, and six strikeouts.

The Bears finished the afternoon with 11 hits, but once again struggled with runners on base going 3-for-20 with runners on base, and 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Tayman went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two driven in. He opened the day with a long home run that landed on the roof of the rec center beyond left field, it was his fourth home run of the year. He also had an RBI single in the sixth that briefly cut the Wildcats lead to 5-3.

Advincula finished the day 1-for-5 with the RBI double in the fifth. The lone hit extends his hitting streak to 19 games, matching the hitting streak by Nathan Martorella in 2021. Peyton Schulze went 2-for-4 with a double, and Jag Burden also collected a pair of hits.

The Wildcats scored three in the fifth off reliever Tom Mayer. Mayer entered the game in the third inning and retired the first eight batters he faced. With two outs in the fifth, an RBI single from Emilio Corona and a 2-run double by Andrew Cain allowed the three runs to score.

Arizona put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth scoring two more runs. Mason White, Adonys Guzman, Maddox Mihalakis, and Cain all had multiple hits on the day for the Wildcats.

Cal returns to action on Tuesday when it wraps up a five-game homestand when Saint Mary's comes to Stu Gordon Stadium. Tuesday's game is scheduled for a 6:05 p.m. first pitch and will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
