Schulze Hits Walk-Off Blast In The 11th

Cal’s Bullpen Brilliant Once Again

BERKELEY – Peyton Schulze led off the 11th inning and decided that was enough baseball for one Friday evening. He jumped all over a two-strike offering, launching it the opposite way to give the Bears a thrilling 6-5 win over Washington at Stu Gordon Stadium. The win was Cal's 15th comeback win of the season and seventh walk-off win.

The home run from Schulze was not the only dramatic home run of the evening for the Golden Bears. In the bottom of the eighth with two down, PJ Moutzouridis hit a game-tying 2-run blast to help the Bears climb back from an early 5-0 deficit. Cal (33-18, 16-13 Pac-12) got another brilliant performance from its stalwart bullpen pitchers Christian Becerra and Tyler Stasiowski who combined to throw 7.1 innings of one-hit ball.

Washington (19-28-1, 10-19) jumped out to a big lead early, scoring five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Cam Clayton had a three-hit night, which included a double and a home run for the Huskies. He was joined by Carson Ohland as the only player with multiple hits.

Ian May got the start for the Bears and was strong through three innings. In the fourth, the wheels came off. Five straight Huskies reached to open the frame. AJ Guerrero led off with an infield single, he scored on the 2-run home run from Clayton. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Ohland and Sam DeCarlo made it 4-0. UW kept the rally going when Terry Braeden beat the shift with an RBI single through the left side.

Christian Becerra entered the game for the Bears in the top of the fourth and got the final out. May went 3.2 innings, surrendering eight hits, and five runs – all earned, with a strikeout.

Cal got two back in the home half scoring a pair of unearned runs against starter Jared Engman. PJ Moutzouridis led off the inning with a single through the left side. He advanced to second on a wild pitch. Caleb Lomavita reached via a walk putting two aboard with no outs. A throwing error by the catcher Colton Bower on a wild pitch allowed Moutzouridis to score from second and moved Lomavita up to third. A ground out to short from Schulze knocked in Lomavita to score the Bears' second run of the game.

Becerra retired the side in the fifth and started a run of 11 straight batters retired. In the bottom of the fifth Dominic Smaldino made it a 5-3 game when he hit a solo home run over the left-field fence. It was his third home run of the homestand. He finished the night going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Bears and Huskies traded zeros in the sixth and seventh. In the bottom of the eighth inning, UW looked poised to hang another zero on the board. Jarren Advincula reached via a fielder's choice when relief pitcher Reilly McAdams could not find the bag on a potential double play. The next batter Moutzouridis, made them pay, smashing a 3-1 offering over the left field fence for his seventh home run of the season.

Tyler Stasiowski (5-1) entered the game in the top of the ninth, taking the ball from Becerra who tossed 4.1 innings allowing a hit with three strikeouts. Stasiowski retired all nine batters he faced while striking out five – including the side in the ninth to earn his fifth win of the season.

The loss went to Grant Cunningham (3-4). Cunningham worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth. He made quick work of the Bears in the 10th and came out for his third inning of work when Schulze got the better of him. His final line for the evening was 2.0+ inning pitched, two hits, a run, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Cal goes for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is at 12:05 p.m. There will be a special pregame ceremony on the field honoring Cal's eight seniors before the start of the contest.
