Hicks, Shaheed Advance To Saturday’s Quarterfinals
Hurdles And Sprints Stars Look To Book Spots For Eugene
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – On Thursday – day two of the NCAA West Preliminary – California track & field's women started off their slate of competition at John McDonnell Field and qualified a pair of track athletes to the next round of their respective races. Both will need to place in the top 12 in their events on Saturday to clinch a spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Senior
Jada Hicks advanced to Saturday's 100m hurdles quarterfinal with a wind-aided time of 13.06, decisively winning her heat by .14 seconds. In the same event,
Asjah Atkinson posted a time of 13.49 in her Regionals debut, while
Jazlynn Shearer concluded her 2024 campaign with a time of 13.72.
Junior
Aysha Shaheed, running the 100m-200m double, earned the last qualifying spot to the quarterfinal after posting a wind-aided 100m PR of 11.22. She also posted a wind-aided career best in the 200m (23.23) but missed out on advancement by just two places.
Ryan Lacefield, who posted a stellar year with the Bears that saw her rise to No. 7 in program history in the 400m, finished her race in 53.76 to end her season.
Amari Turner, who owns the outdoor pole vault record for Cal, finished her collegiate career with a clearance of 4.10m (13-5.25), matched by teammate
Ali Sahaida. Senior
Kylie Hilton also competed but did not record a mark.
Appearing at Regionals for the first time in her career was junior
Destiny Okoh, who was the top finisher for Cal in the women's hammer throw at 57.10m (187-4). Teammates
Kay Racine (56.49m/185-4) and
Adrianna Coleman (52.08m/170-10) followed her in the hammer standings. Fellow thrower
Carolina Visca closed out her season in the javelin with a best throw of 48.61m (159-5).
