Four individuals with ties to California track & field are set to appear over the next two weeks at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, matching up with many of the nation's top professional and collegiate athletes at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials to compete for a spot on the world's biggest stage this summer at the Olympic Games in Paris. Fans based in the U.S. can watch the meet on NBC, Peacock, and USA.

To qualify for the Olympic Team, athletes must finish in the top three of their respective events and must either have reached the Olympic Standard or own a spot in the World Rankings quota. The latter is calculated by considering an athlete's competitions throughout the season – both results and placings – through a point system. None of Cal's four athletes competing in the U.S. Trials are currently within the World Rankings or have reached the Olympic Standard in their events; they will need to do so at the Trials.

Sprinter David Foster, who earned Second-Team All-America status in both the 100m and 4x100m less than two weeks ago at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, hopes to build upon his successes at Hayward in his first senior U.S. Championships. Two years ago, his performance at the 2022 USATF U20 Championships (also held in Eugene) earned him a place on Team USA as a member of the 4x100m relay competing at the U20 World Championships, where he earned a bronze medal. Foster boasts a wind-legal PR of 10.14 in the 100m, which is the current school record, and is the only Golden Bear to ever break 10 seconds in any conditions after posting a 9.91 wind-aided time at the NCAA West Regional in May. This year's Olympic Standard for the men's 100m is 10.00.

Pole vaulter Tyler Burns redshirted in his third year with the Bears and found great success competing unattached, posting the best performance of his career of 5.66m (18-6.75) in April. In his first two years with Cal, he rose to No. 3 in program history on both the indoor and outdoor lists, also adding a conference medal to his résumé with a third-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships in 2023. He will need to add over six inches to his PR to reach the Olympic Standard, which is 5.82m (19-1).

Discus thrower Jasmine Blair finished her career at No. 2 on Cal's all-time list, first reaching the U.S. Trials qualifying standard with her throw of 58.52m (192-0) at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational and posting a best mark of 59.60m (195-6) at the Big Meet later that month. She is a two-time Pac-12 silver medalist, earning the first in 2022 and the second in 2024. Joining her in the same event is volunteer assistant coach Elena Bruckner, who spent her collegiate career at Texas before joining the Bears' staff for the 2022 season. A 2023 World Championships competitor, Bruckner boasts a personal and season best of 62.38m (204-8); she is the closest of all four Cal athletes to a spot in the World Rankings quota, trailing Nigeria's Obiageri Pamela Amaechi by just six points. The 2024 Olympic Standard for the women's discus is 64.50m (211-7).
