Nikolaos Papanikolaou helped Greece earn a decisive victory in his Olympic debut while two Golden Bear swimmers advanced to the men's 100-meter backstroke final, highlighting Sunday's action at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Papanikolaou, a three-time winner of the Peter J. Cutino Award as the United States' top collegiate player, scored once in the Greeks' 14-7 win over Romania to open group play. He was one of four Cal men's water polo players in action Sunday, as three Americans –
Luca Cupido,
Johnny Hooper and
Adrian Weinberg – were on the wrong end of a 12-8 loss to Italy.

Ryan Murphy (USA), the Olympic record holder in the 100m back and a two-time Olympic medalist in the event, was joined by Hugo González (Spain) in narrowly advancing to the final, which will take place Monday afternoon. The two backstrokers were among a group of five swimmers, men and women, in competition Sunday.

Men's Rowing
Martin Mackovic and Serbian partner Nikolaj Pimenov advanced to Tuesday's men's double sculls semifinals after winning their Repechage race in 6:31.54. After placing fourth in their opening race on Saturday, the Serbians needed a top-three finish in the Repechage and earned it convincingly.

Two other Golden Bears –
Ollie Maclean (New Zealand) and
Jack Robertson (Australia) advanced through men's four heats into Final A. Maclean and company won their heat in 6:03.08, while Robertson and the Aussies placed second in theirs at a time of 6:06.84.
Tim Roth (Switzerland) also competed in the men's four but placed fourth in the opening heat, and will have to try and advance through the Repechage round on Tuesday to earn a spot in the final.

Women's Rowing
Inger Kavlie (Norway) and partner Thea Helseth qualified for the women's double sculls semifinals by placing second in the first of two Repechages. The duo clocked 7:10.39 and advanced to the semifinals along with Netherlands and Italy.

Women's Soccer
Ifeoma Onumonu logged 29 minutes of action off the bench but could not help lift Nigeria past top-ranked Spain in a 1-0 loss in Women's Group C. It was a scoreless contest until Spain netted the lone goal in the 85th minute, resulting in Nigeria's second straight loss to open Olympic group play. Onumonu and company will return to the pitch for a final group play match against Japan at 8 a.m. PT Wednesday.

Men's Swimming
Four Golden Bears representing three countries were in action at La Defense Arena, highlighted by Murphy and González earning spots in the 100m back final. Both Murphy and González narrowly advanced through semifinals, finishing fifth (52.72) and eighth (52.95), respectively. They were joined by
Hunter Armstrong (USA), a member of Cal's postgraduate training group, in the semis, but Armstrong did not advanced after placing 11th in 53.11. Murphy – a two-time Olympic medalist in the 100m back, including gold in Rio in 2016 – and González will swim in the final at 12:19 p.m. PT Monday.

Lucas Henveaux went 1:46.04 in the 200m freestyle prelims to earn the third seed in the semifinals, but later placed 11th overall in 1:46.20.

Women's Swimming
Rising senior
Leah Polonsky (Israel) clocked 2:00.38 to finish seventh in heat 2 of the 200m free prelims. Polonsky failed to advance to the semifinals, placing 19th overall.

Men's Water Polo
Papanikolaou scored once in 12 minutes of action in Greece's 14-7 win over Romania. His lone goal came at the 7:34 mark of the second period to extend Greece's lead to 5-2.

Cal's American trio of Cupido, Hooper and Weinberg suffered a 12-8 defeat to Italy in their opening group play match. Weinberg – who, alongside Papanikolaou, helped Cal win three straight NCAA titles from 2021-23 – started in goal and registered eight saves, but the U.S. men trailed 9-4 after three quarters and could not overcome the deficit. Hooper netted his lone goal, and Americans' final goal of the match, with 26 seconds remaining.

Badminton
All three Golden Bears in badminton doubles group play lost Sunday. American twins
Annie Xu and
Kerry Xu forced a third game but ultimately fell short with a 2-1 loss (22-24, 21-17, 12-21) to Hong Kong's Nga Ting Yeung and Pui Lam Yeung. The Xu twins will return to group play against Bulgaria on Tuesday. Meanwhile,
Joshua Yuan and American partner were defeated 2-0 (13-21, 14-21) by China's Yu Chen and Xuan Yi Ou. Yuan plays again Monday, facing Japan in group play at 10:30 a.m. PT.

Table Tennis
Four-time Olympian
Lily Zhang (USA) rolled to a 4-0 win against Lebanon's Mariana Sahakian in the women's singles round of 64. Zheng bested Sahakian 11-7, 11-6, 11-4, 11-6 to earn a spot in the round of 32, which will be played at noon PT Monday.
