Golden Bears Tie School Record With 23 Medals

Cal Affilliates Excel At 2024 Summer Olympics

It seemed everywhere you looked across Northern France the past two weeks, there were not only Golden Bears competing in the Olympics – but winning medals in the process.

Cal's contingent of 59 Olympians made its mark on the 2024 Summer Games – amassing a collective 23 medals while competing in nine different sports. That tied the Cal record for most medals accrued during a single Olympics and was the second-most of any school in the country. If Cal was a country itself, it would have ranked 12th in the overall medal count. Golden Bears also accounted for almost one-quarter of the 98 total medals accumulated by ACC institutions.

Golden Bears made the most impact at La Defense Arena, where their collection of swimmers brought home 10 medals – including four golds. Three-time Olympian Ryan Murphy (USA) won a gold medal in the 4x100-meter mixed relay while also adding a silver in the 4x100 men's medley relay and a bronze in the 100 backstroke. Murphy now has nine career Olympic medals, including five golds.

Rising senior Jack Alexy and Hunter Armstrong of Cal's postgrad training group helped Team USA win the gold medal in the 4x100 freestyle relay while also earning silver in the 4x100 men's medley relay. Alumna Abbey Weitzeil (USA) also picked up a gold medal in the 4x100 mixed medley relay and a silver in the 4x100 free relay.

Cal registered six rowing medals, including four silver medals – Olav Molenaar (The Netherlands) in the men's eight, Ollie Maclean (New Zealand) in the men's four, and Sydney Payne (Canada) and Caileigh Filmer (Canada) in the women's eight. Christian Tabash (USA) earned a bronze in the men's eight while Rowan McKellar (Great Britain) did the same in the women's eight.

Golden Bears collected four medals in water polo, including three on the men's side after Team USA's impressive run to the bronze-medal game. Goalie Adrian Weinberg, who wrapped up his Cal career in December by helping the Bears win their third straight NCAA championship, was especially dominant in helping the Americans win the bronze medal. Alums Luca Cupido and Johnny Hooper also helped the Untied States earn the hardware, as did assistant coach Gavin Arroyo – another Cal alum. Alumna Kitty Lynn Joustra helped the Netherlands knock off three-time defending Olympic champion United States on their way to a bronze medal as well.

In track & field, three-time NCAA champion Camryn Rogers (Canada) took home the gold medal in the women's hammer throw while rising junior Mykalos Alekna (Lithuania) took the silver in the men's discus. Alumna Georgia Bell (Great Britain), who took five years off from running before making a comeback, captured the bronze medal in the 1,500-meter run.

Cal affiliates have now 246 Olympic medals all-time, including 126 golds.
