Lema Matches 2023 Goal Total
It took all of four matches for
Karlie Lema to match her 2023 goal total of four, scoring three during opening week and another during week two. That mark is good for second in the ACC. After falling behind UCSD 1-0 in the season opener, Lema scored both the equalizer and the game winner in the second half to earn her second career brace. With her team down 2-0 on the road at then-No. 22 Santa Clara, she added her third goal via a penalty kick in the 84th minute that kept the Bears' chances alive.
McManus Saves Seven In Bear Debut
UCLA graduate transfer
Kelly McManus made her first-career collegiate start between the posts on Aug. 25 and did not disappoint. The former national champion made a career-high seven saves in the 1-1 tie with Gonzaga, including a number of highlight, game-saving plays in the final 20 minutes. McManus earned her first win the very next match as the Bears topped San Francisco 6-1.
Second-Half Surge
Over its first four matches Cal did the bulk of its scoring in the second half with seven of its 10 goals coming in the final 45 minutes. The Bears currently hold a 7-2 second-half goal differential and have yet to be shut out in the period.
Two Bears Named To U20 FIFA Women's World Cup Rosters
Teagan Wy (USA) and
Miriam Hils (Germany) have been named to U20 FIFA Women's World Cup rosters. They will join their respective teams in Bogota, Colombia, from Aug. 31-Sept. 22.
The latest step in Wy's international career comes after a successful national team camp back in February when the US picked up a pair of 1-0 wins over Colombia. The Golden Bear keeper went wire-to-wire in the second match and picked up a shutout win with three saves.
Wy helped the United States qualify for this year's World Cup as a member of the 2023 CONCACAF Women's U20 Championship team that took second place in April 2023. This will be her second World Cup experience as she served as a backup on the U20 team from 2022.
Hils, who is originally from Delbrück, Germany, is coming off an impactful freshman season with the Bears in which she started in 16 matches as a defender. This will be her second trip to the U20 FIFA Women's World Cup after starting and going the distance in all three of Germany's matches in 2022.
Wy Earns ACC Preseason Honors
Just hours after being named to the world cup roster, Wy became the first Bear to be named to the Preseason All-ACC team. She was the sole goalkeeper selected to the team and Cal was one of just seven teams in the 17-school conference to be represented. Last year, Wy started in all 19 matches as a sophomore and tallied 86 saves, good for the second most both in program history and among Pac-12 goalkeepers that season. Her six shutouts and .796 save percentage earned her Third-Team All-Pac-12 honors.
Back In Camp
This season Cal returns 25 Bears from the 2023 squad, including eight starters. Three transfers from prominent programs and four true freshmen join the program. Check out
