THOUSAND OAKS – The California men's tennis team opened the Sherwood Collegiate Cup on Friday with six wins in eight matches at the Sherwood Country Club.
 
The invitational began with doubles, with the Cal duo of senior Alex Chang and sophomore Jonathan Irwanto defeating BYU's Tygen Goldhammer and Hardy Owen 6-3, while sophomores Alex Aney and Ethan Schiffman fell to BYU's Adam Chodur and Redd Owen 6-4.
 
In singles, the 123rd-ranked Chang beat Pepperdine's Linus Carlsson Halldin 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, Aney topped LMU's Sebastian Nothhaft 6-2, 6-4, Schiffman bested SMU's Vikas Deo 6-2, 7-5 and Irwanto lost to LMU's Youssef Sadek 7-5, 6-2.
 
The Bears closed the day with doubles. Chang and Irwanto won their second match, a 6-4 result over LMU's Nothhaft and Jacopo Denitto, while Aney and Schiffman beat LMU's Sadek and Sascha Nothdurft 6-2.
 
The three-day event continues Saturday.
