BERKELEY – Sophomore
Holly Pears scored with less than four minutes remaining to lift the California field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over visiting Northeastern on Thursday afternoon at Underhill Field.
After the Huskies had tied the game right before the end of the third quarter, Pears took a feed from freshman
Liz Klompmaker during a scrum in front of the Northeastern goal and pushed her shot past Huskies' goalkeeper Kristi Merashoff for the game-winner. It was Pears' first goal of the season and her first since netting the game-winner in overtime against Albany during last year's America East championship game.
Klompmaker, who scored both of Cal's goals in its season-opening victory over Michigan State on Sunday, converted her third score of the season in the second quarter to put the Golden Bears in front before Northeastern tied the game at 2-2. Freshman
Maya Hoepfner and senior
Sophie Everett registered assists on her goal.
Junior Morgan Kallman got Cal (2-0) on the board late in the first quarter with her first goal of the season before the Huskies knotted the score at 1-1 less than two minutes later.
"I was very happy with the run of play," Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey
Shellie Onstead said. "It was a scrappy game and I'm glad we showed we could handle it."
Goalkeeper
Tina Jolly and senior
Sydney Decher led the defensive effort for the Bears, who have allowed just three goals during their first two games. Jolly made four saves during Thursday's victory.
Cal is right back at it at Underhill Field on Friday when it hosts Kent State at 4 p.m.
