California-Auburn Postgame Notes

  • Cal's victory was its' first win ever against Auburn in its' first ever game played at Auburn. Cal is now 1-1 all-time against Auburn (14-10 loss at Cal in 2023).
  • Cal has now won four of its last five games against SEC teams (2007 - vs. Tennessee; 2017 - vs. Ole Miss; 2019 - at Ole Miss; 2024 - at Auburn). The Golden Bears' lone loss in the stretch was the home loss to Auburn in 2023. 
  • Cal did not commit a turnover and has just one in its first two games after tying for the most turnovers in the nation in 2023 with 28,
  • QB Fernando Mendoza finished 25-of-36 for 233 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Mendoza's 25 completions equaled a career high set previously vs. USC in 2023.
  • RB Jaivan Thomas had the second rushing and third overall touchdown of his career. Thomas finished with career highs of eight rushes and 53 yards rushing.
  • WR Nyziah Hunter had a pair of touchdown receptions to mark the first time a Cal player has had two TD catches since Jeremiah Hunter at UCLA in the 2023 regular-season finale. Hunter finished with a career-high-tying four receptions and 44 yards receiving in his second career game. In the first two games of 2024, Hunter has all three Cal touchdown receptions of 2024 and also leads the squad in receptions (8) and yards receiving (91).
  • WR Jonathan Brady finished with Cal career highs of four receptions and yards receiving in his second career game at Cal. His 63 yards receiving were a game high, while his four receptions tied Hunter and WR Mavin Anderson for a game-high.
  • TE Corey Dyches ran his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 28 in a row. Dyches had one reception for three yards.
  • Nine different Cal players had receptions in Anderson, Brady, Dyches, TE Jack Endries, WR Trond Grizzell, Hunter. WR Matt Matthews, WR Mason Starling and Thomas.
  • Cal's five takeaways were their most since also getting five in a 2018 regular-season home win over Colorado. Cal's +5 turnover margin was also its' best since being +5 in the same 2018 contest against Colorado.
  • Cal's four Interceptions were their most since the Bears also had four in a loss to TCU in the 2018 Cheez-It Bowl. Cal now has seven interceptions in its first two games. Cal led the nation with three interceptions through Week 1 games. In 2023, Cal tied for the nation's lead with 28 takeaways (12 interceptions).

  • DB Nohl Williams had the ninth and 10th interceptions of his career, as well as his fourth and fifth at Cal and second and third this season.
  • DB Lu-Magia Hearns III had his first interception of the season and the fourth of his Cal career.
  • DB Jair Smith had both his first sack and first interception at Cal.
  • ILB Teddye Buchanan finished with Cal career highs of 11 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss (-21 yards), 2.0 sacks (-13 yards), one forced fumble and two quarterback hurries.
  • DB Craig Woodson had the second fumble recovery of his career.
  • P Lachlan Wilson pinned Auburn on its 2-yardline twice and averaged 54.0 yards per punt on two third-quarter punts. Wilson finished with seven punts for a 46.6 average and pinned the Tigers inside their 20-yard line four times.
  • Cal started its 13 drives with an average field possession of its own 42-yard line, while Auburn began its 13 drives on an average of its own 21-yardline.
  • Cal had two players make their first starts for the Golden Bears in OLB Ryan McCulloch and DB Ryan Yaites (at NB).
  • DB Khamani Hudson made his first collegiate appearance off the bench.
  • Cal held a sizeable lead in time of possession (35:16 - 24:44).
  • Cal converted 10-of-19 third-down attempts.
  • Cal played in its second game as a member of the ACC.
