BERKELEY – The California women's tennis team had a near-perfect start to its Cal Winter Invitational, with the Golden Bears playing at home for the first time in 2025. They won all four of their doubles matches and went 8-1 in singles to start the three-day annual event at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts.
 
The Cal pair of Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm defeated Cal Poly's Kennedy Buntrock and Romane Mosse 6-2 on court one at Hellman, which hosted all of Friday morning's doubles action. Playing on court two, the Bears' Berta Passola Folch and freshman Greta Greco Lucchina – in her first match in Berkeley – beat the Mustangs' Jessica MacCallum and Alexandra Ozerets 6-0. Lan Mi and Tiziana-Marie Schomburg prevailed 6-3 over the Saint Mary's duo of Tiana Fox and MiaAngelina Ruja on court five, while Cami Brown and Mao Mushika bested Ozerets and Jessica MacCallum 6-4 on court two.
 
Greco Lucchina – a newcomer from Italy – later captured her first singles match in Berkeley when she bested Ozerets 6-3, 6-2. Among Cal's singles wins were results from their nationally ranked Bears – 81st-ranked Passola Folch beat the Gaels' Ruja 6-4, 6-3; 63rd-ranked Mi won 6-2, 6-1 over the Gaels' Juliette Daries; 71st-ranked Mushika won 6-1, 6-1 against the Mustangs' Mosse; and 35th-ranked Wiersholm prevailed 7-5, 6-3 over Cal Poly's Buntrock to end Friday's matches at Hellman.
 
The Cal Winter Invitational continues Saturday with matches starting at 10:30 a.m. PT.
