SPOKANE, Wash. – California track & field lived up to its high billing Friday as the Golden Bears headed north to start off their indoor season at the Spokane Sports Showcase and the Spokane Indoor Challenge, winning three events and earning several program top-10 marks at The Podium.

Five of those program top 10s came from the sprints and hurdles group, led by junior transfer Johnny Goode and his school-record 400m time of 46.68 that bested Paramveer Chohan's 2019 mark by one-tenth of a second. Cal also excelled in the 60m dash on both the men's and women's sides, with the former advancing two (senior David Foster and redshirt junior Gavin Schurr) to the final. Foster, a 2024 All-American in the event, placed second by tying his own school record of 6.54, while Schurr's preliminary time of 6.63 moved him up from No. 10 to No. 2 in program history. Senior Aysha Shaheed moved up the women's 60m all-time list with a qualifying time of 7.38 that earned her Cal's No. 5 spot. The women's 60m hurdlers were paced by senior Asjah Atkinson and sophomore Mari Testa, as the former posted a finals time of 8.44 to improve her own No. 6 program entry and the latter notched a personal-best 8.63 – ninth-fastest in program history – in the qualifying round. In total, 12 members of the sprints and hurdles unit recorded personal bests on the day.

The Bears' ever-strong throws group continued to demand attention, sweeping the women's weight throw podium. Transfer redshirt sophomore (and 2024 All-American) Giavonna Meeks unleashed a winning toss of 20.71m (67-11.5) that immediately catapulted her up to No. 4 in program history, while rookie Valentina Savva made her indoor debut with a second-place mark of 19.61m (64-4) that clinched Cal's No. 6 entry and sophomore Adrianna Coleman took third at 19.29m (63-3.5). For the men, redshirt senior transfer Jared Freeman took third place in the weight throw after launching the implement 19.55m (64-1.75), good for sixth in Cal history in his career indoor debut.

Cal fielded a small contingent in the distance events but made themselves known as junior Jayden Hill ran her first-ever indoor 800m and posted a winning time of 2:18.13, beating out the second-place runner by over four seconds, while redshirt senior Iyan Godwin finished the 600m in 1:19.16 for the second-fastest time in program history. The Bears' jumpers collected three top-three finishes, led by junior Jason Plumb's second-place mark of 7.69m (25-2.75) in the long jump that put him among the program's all-time top-five men in the event. Sophomore Jeremiah Bolaños claimed a second-place mark of his own with an indoor personal-best triple jump of 15.00m (49-2.5), while junior Parker Terrill took third in the men's pole vault with a best clearance of 4.98m (16-4).

Meanwhile, over in Reno, Nevada, additional big things were happening for Cal's pole vault group at the National Pole Vault Summit. After accepting the "College Coach of the Year" award on behalf of Cal Assistant Coach Dan Lefever, redshirt junior Tyler Burns smashed his indoor PR in the Elite Men's #2 competition with a third-place leap of 5.50m (18-1), bringing him up to No. 2 in school history and surpassing the best mark set by father and Cal Athletics Hall of Famer Brent Burns.
